Found In TORONTO (CP) -- A young girl has described to police here two years of terror in what of- ficers call the "anatomy of a white slave case." The girl's story is retold in a four-page report by detectives. Deputy Police Chief George Elliot told a press conference that a month of investigation by detectives working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation led to the conviction and seven- year sentencing this week of John L, Smith for the abduc- tion of a 19-year-old Montreal- area girl. He said investigation showed the girl had been a prisoner of the Plattsburg, N.Y. man for two years during which she was beaten and threatened with death. The case came to light when the girl was arrested on a charge of false pretences when she made purchases on another person's charge account. The charge was a minor one and she could have gone free on bail but she pleaded to be kept in jail. POLICE CHECK HISTORY "Jail is better than the life I've lived for the last two years,"' she sobbed, and so po- lice backtracked every detail in her history. Smith left the city when the girl was arrested but returned the day before she was released after serving a 10-day term and took a motel room telling the clerk it was for himself and his wife. Then he sent a telegram to the girl at the jail, signing her, parents' names, and telling her' to take a taxi to the motel. "Please don't disappoint us as we love you very much,"' the wire said. Smith met her outside the motel room and--evidence at the trial revealed--seized her by the throat and dragged her in.
