THE OSHAWA TIMES , Friday, December 14,1962 2] | Auto Seat Belts Already Adequate TORONTO (CP)--Most Cana- dian manufacturers of automo- bile safety belts already are more than qualified to meet an Ontario standards regu- lation which goes into effect at new year's. ' Transport Minister James Auld has announced that after Jan. 1 all such belts sold in Ontario must carry the ap- proval stamp of the Society of "Automotive Engineers or the Canadian Standards Association certifying that they have met certain standards of safety and| good manufacture. | Mr. Auld said in announcing)! the new regulation that it was not meant as a reflection on turers made production changes to bring their belts up to stand- ard. Some others required no change beyond, for example, using a better quality of dye in coloring the product. By the end of November, Mr. Dymond says, the full stand- ards had been met by the 13 companies. The exact number of Canadian firms marketing the belts is not known, but CSA officials believe the total is be- tween 15 and 20. The CSA does not release the name of any) conipany whose products it jtests. |MAKE SPOT CHECKS Once a company has sub- Canadian seat belt manufac- turers, whose products in many mitted a belt, gained approval and started marketing the prod- cases already exceeded the re-juct "CSA certified," the asso- quirements. Criticism was aroused in the industry more than a month) ago when Desmond Dymond, managing engineer of the CSA's certification department here,| was quoted in Vancouver as saying that no Canadian-made seat belt had met CSA safety) . standards when tests were in- stiuted earlier in he year. Mr. Dymond says this report, carried Oct. 31 by The Cana-| dian Press, was erroneous and gave the impression that all Ca-) nadian belts were unsafe. This was not the case, he said.
