Detective Robert Cook of the Sarnia police department told the court Thursday he took statements from the brothers denying they had any knowl- edge that the fire was set. splitting the Official History Sides With Monty LONDON (AP)--An official British history of the Secondjhistory, his plan was to engage World War today reviewed/and hold the great bulk of the Field Marshal Viscount Mont- gomery's historic conflict of opinion with his fellow generals on strategy in the Normandy campaign and decided that Monty was right. Montgomery's opposition to aid. allied advance through France into two prongs --a plan advocated by U.S. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower-- was completely justified, it The 600-page volume pub- lished today is called Victory in the West. It coyers the three months of the Normazdy cam- paign immediately after the D-day landings and continues a series of official histories cover- ing every aspect of the war. On Montgomery's relations "Ike and I were poles apart when it cameto conduct of the war." But the history does say: "It is doubtful whether Gen. Eisenhower ever fully under- stood Montgomery's in- tentions." The time of_this misunder- standing was July 1944, The Americans were on the right flank of the allied line. The British on the left were push- ing through northern Frace to- ward the Belgian frontier. On July 18 came the Battle of Caen, code-named Goodwood. The Americans on the right flank were impatient because| Montgomery apparently was stalled. with Eisenhower, the supreme allied commander, the work is less dramatic than Montgomery' himself. Monty wrote in his memoirs: In fact, says the official war German Army and so give U.S. forces a clean run to the right. The aim, it said, was clarly shown by Montgomery's previ- ous instructions to his subordi- nate commanders. : The book: discloses that for months in 1944 the allies kept @ ghost army on a fake alert in Scotland. The aim was to convince the Germans that they planned to invade Norway. The army in fact consisted of nothing but a few radio stations crackling but spurious messages to be picked up by the German monitoring system, Unidentified Boys Rescue Woman, 40 HAMILTON (CP) -- Two un identified Hamilton boys have been credited with saving the life of Mrs. Angelo Castellani, about 40, who was found in @ semi-conscious condition after fire broke out in her bedroom Thursday night. Firemen said the alarm was received from a home nearby after two boys told the occu- pants, Mr. and Mrs. M. Mar. tell, they saw fire s from 'the rear of their neigh. bor's residence, The boys then walked away. Firemen broke into the house, extinguished the fire, and Mrs. Castellani was taken to hospi- tal where she was reported in satisfactory condition, Hospital Officials said the woman suf. fered smoke poisoning and had no apparent burns. .
