Industrials came out of the week slightly on the downside. Daily trading volumes con- tracted with downward swings, increased as prices advanced. Chartered banks, sparkplugs of the brisk November indus- trial advance, ran into profit- taking this week. Bank of Mont- real was the favorite target; it dropped more than §3. Utilities showed the only group strength, led by Power Corporation's $1 gain, Steels, refining oils and pipe- lines presented a mixed pic- ture. Alberta Gas, Trans-Mountain Pipeline and Montreal Locomo- tive all had gains of a!most $1. Consolidated Paper weakened its group with a drop of more than $1. Financial institutions were paced by Industrial Acceptance, which climbed almost $2 with news it has made a takeover bid to Sovereign Life Assurance $475,000 Surplus Recorded By CNE TORONTO (CP)--The Cana- dian National Exhibition re- corded a surplus of $475,000 this year, an increase of $183,000 over 1961, Toronto's Mayor- elect Donald Summerville said Friday. Mr. iummerville also re- leased figures showing that the evening grandstand show took in $344,410 with costs of $339,- 541, The afternoon grandstand show drew $120,906 and cost $106,127. He said the CNE's board of directors has set Aug. 16-Sept. 2 as dates for next year's show and is considering allowing two extra days--Aug. 14-15. Further studies on lowering the general admission price from 75 cents to 50 cents will also be made. Bond Market Prices Slip During Week Prices on Canadian bond mar- kets slipped slightly in light trading this week. The 91-day treasury bills in- creased to an average of 3.81 per cent from 3.71 per cent last week and the 182-day bills to 3.94 per cent from 3.83 per cent, Day-to-day money ranged be- tween 3% and 3 per ce%nt. Main interest on the govern- ment market centred on the new $500,000,000 Government of Can. ada issue which consisted of $50,000,000 3% - per - cent bonds due Feb. 1, 1965 or 98.75 to yield 4% per cent and $150,000,000 4%-per-cent bonds due Jan. 15, 1968 at 99.25 to yield 4.42 per cent. The Bank of Canada ac- quired $200,000,000 of the new bonds. On the long-term market the Canada 41%4-per-cent Sept. 1, 1972 bonds traded at 95.25, while the 4%-per-cent Sept. 1, 1983 bonds at 92.50.
