SPEER JONES The important belief we study today is the one known as re- demption. This is very similar to salvation, except that the word also denotes the means by which salvation is achieved-- through the payment of a ran- som. Our salvation as men-- that which can lift us above and beyond the life of natural or un- redeemed man, delivering us named us His children, made us His heirs, redeemed us and for- given us. All this is contrasted beautt- fully by Paul, as he goes on in the second chapter of Ephesians to list the characteristics of the natural or unredeemed man. He is spiritually dead because of his sins, he walks only in this world, under Satans's power ("The prince of the powers of GOLDEN TEXT "There is one God, and there is one Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, Who gave Himself as a ransom for all,"--I Timothy 2:5, 6, from sin, fear, selfishness and eternal death--this salvation is the air'), disobeying his duty, catering only to the desires of od,{flesh and mind, a child of provided by the grace of God, through the ransom paid by His own Son in His death. This great sacrifice of the Re- deemer is prophesied in what has been called the greatest Messianic prophecy in the Old Testament, the magnificent 53rd chapter of Isaiah. It is} similar to Psalm 22 and to Psalm 110, except that it goes much farther, almost explaining the others. The profound results of this great sacrifice, for Us, are out- lined in IJ Corinthians 5:18-21 and Ephesians 1:3-10. The first entails our reconciliation with God or the restoring of peace between ourselves and Him. Sin has allenated us from Him, and ft is Christ who makes recon- cijiation 'possible, with His own death. God has provided the means fer this reconciliation; all we have to do is accept it. This is the burden of Paul's message, in this passage and elsewhere. It was the ministry conferred on Paul by God--the message he bears to the world. GIVES FAITH The eight verses from first Ephesians continue in this same vein. Not even our act of faith can be credited to us; even that is a gift from God, Also He has blessed us, chosen us in Christ wrath. Thus desperately in need of redemption, we are linked with Christ, the "Mediator" (I Tim. othy 2:5, 6) who is both God and man. His death frees us from our guilt, and His resur- rection secures for us a new life like His. BEARS FRUIT Christ Himself compared Him- self to a grain of wheat falling to the ground and dying so that it might not remain alone, but bear much fruit in those who would follow Him. All these writings in this les- son were those of Paul, himself the arch-example of the re- deemed man.
