Clerk. Discontent Shown By US. Election By JAMES MARLOW Associated Press Analyst WASHINGTON (AP) -- This| was a catch-as-catch-can United |States election. | It showed no sign of any real | |change toward the government) jin Washington, but it did re-| veal a lot of discontent among) |voters toward their state par-| ties or individuals. The country's national mood; was expressed in 1960 when the| Democrats were given control of the federal government. Vot- ers could have swept them out Tuesday, if they were dissatis- fied, and given the Republicans control of Congress. aa | This didn't happen. ; | The Democrats went into this election with huge majorities in House of Representatives and Senate. As predicted, when the election was over they still re-)* tained them. SEE NO READ ISSUE The reason was pretty clear: In this campaign there was no real issue dividing the country or compelling the voters to seek a new national direction, This much was probably good news! for President Kennedy. But it won't make~his task of trying to get Congress to accept his domestic: programs any eas- ier. The Democratic-run Con- gress was conservative before the election. It remains so be- cause the' changes there were so few. It was in the states that the DRIVE-IN SHOP 163 BLOOR STREET WEST jdiscontent and¢ upsets showed. those rock - ribbed Republican |states of Vermont and Néw |Hampshire where Democrats, for the first time in generations, were elected governors. In Vermont it was Phillip H. Hoff, the first Democrat sent to |the state House in 109 years. n New Hampshire it was John W, King, the first Democrat so |chosen in 40 yéars. But in Michigan and Okla- homa the upsets went the other way. In Michigan George Rom- ney was the first Republican elected governor in 14 years. In Oklahoma the first Republican ever was made governor. This was Henry Bellmon, Former president Eisenhower had campaigned in New Hamp- shire, Kennedy in Michigan. But Kennedy also went to Con. necticut where he friend and fellow-Democrat, Abraham Rib- icoff, was elected to the Senate. And Eisenhower talked in Penn- sylvania where a Republican, William M. Scranton, was elected governor. A prime example of voters' switching around showed up in Ohio where a Democrat, Sena- tor Frank J; Lausche, was re- jelected, but Republican Jamés A. Rhodes defeated Governor Michael V. DiSalle for the state House, The best all around news for the Republicans was'the fact that they had governors elected in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, 'and Michigan, all big states which should give the party needed strength in the (They were most startling in 1 presidential race: * W.
