30 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesdcy, November 6, 1962 Old Country Club Oshawa 'Soroptimists Provide | Ladies Dress City With United Nations Flag This month, the Soroptimist Club of Oshawa and District tg with about 1400 Soroptim- clubs throughout the world to celebrate the founding of the first Soroptimist Club in Almeda County, California, 41 years ago. Since the first club was char- tered with 80 executive women as members, the organization has spread to 33 countries in every continent of the world and the work is now carried on under three federations -- The Federation of the Americas to which the Oshawa club be- longs, the Federation of Great Britain and Ireland and the European Federation, all united in the Soroptimist International Association. All are interested in service work in their own communities and in the larger world sphere. Since its chartering in Febru- ary, 1955, the Oshawa club has assisted the Glen Home School for Retarded Children; the Osh- awa General Hospital, where they provided a waiting room in the new addition; the Can- cer Society; the Tuberculosis Association; the Children's Aid Society by assuming part of the cost of educating a ward of the Society through the Mar- garet Hancock Memorial Fund (this year the recipient is at- tending Teachers' College); sen- ior citizens through gifts at Christmas, pirthday cards, visits and parties at Fairview Lodge and Hillsdale Mancr; and refugee families coming to Canada. Funds are also provided for $500 Regional grants-in-aid of further. education of older women 'in the Eastern Canada Region (Canada and Quebec) and, through the Soroptimist Foundation, for international fellowships valued at $3000 an- nually to bring women to'North America for iuther study at universities on this continent. Help has been given to refu- gees in foreign countries by uniting with Soroptimist Clubs in other Federations to clear a refugee camp in Europe; and the local club is presently sup- porting a child in Austria through the CARE organiza- tion. Early interest in the United Nations sparked the provision of a UN flag for the City of Oshawa which is flown at the City Hall -annually. during the third week of October in cele- bration of United Nations Day. The club also supports the Chil- dren's Fund by selling UNICEF cards and joins with other Soroptimist Clubs in providing funds for UNESCO educational projects.
