Mr. and Mrs. Slyfield are making their home in Ottawa. . --Ireland Studio UNITS, GROUPS, AUXILIARIES KINETTE CLUB The Kinette Club of Oshawa held its October general meeting in the new Kinsmen Community Centre, Colborne street west and McMillan drive, with presi- dent, Mrs. Gordon Garrison, pre- siding. The theme of the even- ing was Hallowe'en with a horn- of-plenty and Jack-o-Lanterns decorating the tables. Prizes were won by Mrs. Bruce Williams, Mrs, Edward Thomson, Mrs. James Hender- son, Mrs. Monty Cranfield, Mrs. George Russell, Mrs. Robert Fry, Mrs. Douglas Hart and Mrs. Peter Williams. Guest for the evening, Mrs. George Thomas, a transfer from the Kinette Club of Welland, was welcomed by Mrs. Gordon Garrison. It was decided that four schol- arships be granted to both the OCCI and Dr, Donevan Colleg- jate to be used in the Home Economics field. Reports were given by Mrs. Boris Melch, Mrs. Ronald Wil- son, Mrs. Bruce Caverly, Mrs. Earle Southern, Mrs. Arthur Stone, Mrs. Donald Fleming, Mrs. Douglas Hart, Mrs. George Fleming, Mrs. Holt Webster and Mrs. Archie Hubert, on their various committee activities. The meeting was then turned over to Mrs. Harold Tyrrell and her committee consisting of Mrs. William Armstrong and Mrs. Peter Canning for the en- oe portion of the meet- ing. The next executive meeting will be held at the new Kins- men Community Centre on Tues- day, October 16, CANADIAN LEGION AUX. The Ladies Auxiliary, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43 held their weekly meeting with presi- dent, Mrs. Norman McEvers, presiding. Plans were made to) add an extra booth at the ba- will feature toys. All donations will be appreciated. The bazaar is to be held on Tuesday, No- vember 27. A meeting of the Christmas Tree Committee is to be held on October 18 at 7 p.m. An invi- tation was received and accept- ed from the Men's Branch to be their guests for a social evening on October 25. This also in- cludes all husbands of auxiliary members. Members of auxiliaries in this zone will be guests next Tues- day, October 14. A program has been arranged by Mrs. Alyn El- liot. Mrs. Frank Davey will con- vene the refreshments. Mrs. Charles Langfield is in a Toronto hospital and Mrs. V. Mason is in the Oshawa Hos- pital. Mrs, Albert Toms and Mrs. C. Stark are sick at home. SA HOME LEAGUE The meeting was opened on Tuesday by Mrs. Wm. James leading in a number of favorite choruses and a special chorus, "Bless Them Now," was sung for the sick folk and Mrs. John Bellingham prayed. Special announcements were made regarding the Congress meetings in Toronto, also those who had taken dolls to dress were asked to bring them in as soon as possible, in order to get them off in time for Christmas to a school in the Yukon. Mrs. E. O. Sargeant and her daughter, Mrs. Melville Smith, Mrs. Ronald Kellington and Mrs. Carman Westlake were in charge of the devotional period. Mrs, Smith led in the first song and read a poem. There were several duets by Mrs. Kelling- ton and Mrs. Westlake. Mrs. Sargeant read from the Psalms- Mrs. Kellington brought the Bible message. Refreshments were served by the Sunshine Circle. Next week's meeting will be in charge of Miss Maud zaar, the Convention booth, and Sargeant's group. ALLGANADIAN FOR 40 YEARS _ we ALL CANADIAN IN 1922 ALL CANADIAN 10 -DAY Holy Cross WA Annual Meeting Election of Officers The October meeting of Holy Cross Women's Auxiliary was held in the parish hall recently. Mrs, J. T. Mullen presided. The treasurer's report showed that due to the work on the var- ious projects during the year, _|the financial position of the Aux- iliary made it possible to give a substantial cheque to Right Reverend Philip Coffey. The welfare convener, Mrs. Joseph Callahan, stated that 473 articles of clothing were sent to a mis- sion 'on Manitoulin Island, 245 articles bg hve ges ogee ly, . ad been spent on pL gg a and drugs to needy families. Mrs, Steve Coe reported for Red Cross Work, showed 32 articles sewed and returned. 'The members had helped serve refreshments at the blood donor clinics held in St. Gregory's Auditorium also each month three members serve at the tuck shop at Hills- dale Manor. The sick convener, Mrs, Coe, also stated flowers, cards and spiritual were sent to the sick, also baby gifts were delivered to mothers with new babies. The social convener, Mrs. James Hickey, had a busy year, serving refreshments for month- ly meetings, monthly social evenings; membership Christ- mas party, annual bazaar; "night of cards" and a lunch- eon for the Grade 8 graduation party, Mrs, J. T. Mullen then thank- ed the members for their help, co-operation and donations of the past year and on behalf of the members presented a cheque to Monsignor Coffey who then presided for the election of ot- ficers who were installed as fol- lows: President, Mrs. James Hanson; Ist vice-president, Mrs Joseph Callahan; 2nd vice- president, Mrs. Jack Langley; 3rd_ vice-president, Mrs. Jack Maher; secretary, Mrs. Walter Stepanishen; treasurcr, Miss Mary Fitzgerald. Monsignor Coffey gave 4 shor' MR. AND MRS. R. J. H. BRANTON talk and thanked the past exec- utive and members for their work and financial assistance and wished the new executive success in the comnig year. The new president then con- ducted a short business meeting. Mrs. Jack Langley was appoint- ed social convener. Other chair- men of committees are: sick, Mrs. Frank Sheppard; Red Cross, Mrs. Steve Coe; mem- bership, Mrs. William Patterson and press, Miss Anne Kennelly. Other conveners and assistants will be chosen at the Novem- ber meeting. The bazaar to be held on No- vember 14 was discussed and the ladies were asked to bring their goods for the fancy work booth to the next meeting. The meeting was adjourned and re- freshments were served by Mrs. James Hickey, Mrs. Joseph Cal- lahan congratulated Mrs. J. T. Mulien on a very successful year and on behalf of the mem- bers presented her with a gift. The next meeting will be No- vember 6 in the parish hall. Branton, 11 Brock street west, were honored recently on the occasion of their 50h wedding! anniversary by a family dinner party held at the Sandalwood! Restaurant. Among the 30 mem- bers present were their daugh- ter, Mrs» John Clairmont, (Grace) and their five sons, Edward, Glenn, Ray, Bruce, Blake and their families. Also attending were Mr. and Mrs Branton's ten grandchildren and two great - grandchildren and Mrs. Branton's brother, Mr. Roy Kellow, Tillsonburg, Miss Mamie Kellow, and Mr. Branton's brother-in-law, Mr. Richard Patterson, Bowman- ville. A presentation was made with the honored couple rece:v. lation from Provincial Secre- tary, the Honorable John Yaremko; the Honorable John Robarts, Premier of Ontariv; and the Honorable Michael Starr, MP and Mrs- Starr, and Mayor Christine Thomas. Mrs. Branton is the former 'Kate Kellow, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs: John Kellow, 'Oshawa, and Mr. Branton is the son of the late Mr, and Mrs. Harry Branton, Bowmanville. SIMCOE HALL BOYS' in 1959 it became apparent that Simcoe Hall was crowded beyond capacity of buildings and staff, It was then decided to make a detailed survey of the south area of Oshawa to find out where further services for boys and girls were required and the type of. building. The survey was conducted with the full co-operation of Protestant, Catholic and Jewish faiths, Schools, Police and Health Departments. In 1960 the membership was 1,263 boys and girls who participated in the programs of youth- training at Simcoe Hall. As a result of the survey, and with the co- operation of the Oshawa City Council, it was decided to locate the Simcoe Hall Club on the a STEWART R. ALGER Chairman mes, Modern showers, lockers and other dressing room facilities will service the CLUB north-east corner of one mile of the New Club there are 15 schools, with 7,379 students; the largest girls and boys group in Oshawa. As Hall, there will be many volunteer workers. Already a number have indicated their will- ingness to assist the trained staff with the many activities at the Simcoe Hall Boys' Club. This of course is an important and dollar- saving part of the New Club's Budget. Although this Simcoe Hall Club will be known as a Boys' Club, all the facilities will be open to girls as well as boys. The club capacity will be 400 girls and 800 boys. The Club will provide a year-round héated swimming pool, size basketball gymnasium, woodwork shop, craft rooms, games. rooms, auditorium and other activity rooms, As we enter the front door of this Club we will first encounter the contro! desk, where clerical work, along with the checking of valuables will be handled. An office and washroom facilities will be adjacent to the main lobby, To the left of the main entrance will be the gymnasium which will provide space for regu- lation basketball; 3 badminton courts, volley ball and many other gymnasium gymnasium and the swimming pool. With the year-round swimming pool, classes will be held in water safety swimming under the direction of highly qualified Red Cross swimming instructors. Bleachers will be provided in both the gymnasium and the swimming pool. A well equipped woodworking shop will be located on the lower level of the building. Space for work. benches, storage cabinets and power. tools will be provided. There will also be a junior games room on the main floor and a senior games room on the upper floor. The games room will be provided with various types of games suitable for girls and boys. A library will be located on the main floor with an assortment of books that the girls and boys will find most interesting. In addition there will be space available 'for such diversified activities as archery, stamp club, fish and game club, chess club, trampoline, cooking school, first aid classes, etc. Money for the capital expense of this building is being raised by private subscription, but help will be needed from the Greater Oshawa Community Chest for the operating expense. Simcoe Hall is a member of the Boys' Club of Canada, which has over 80 Boys' Clubs from British Columbia to Newfoundland. His Excellency Major- General George P. Vanier, Governér.
