Meredith case at the University of Mississippi. Dr, Walter Johns made the Statement when he was asked to comment on action taken by Calgary university students who have invited Negro Meredith to study in Calgary. Gaylen Jones, president of Native Minerals Limited of Cal- gary, said here one of the larg- est gypsum deposits in Western) Canada is located less than. 30 %\miles from coal leases held by United States Steel Corporation in northwestern Alberta, Mr. Jones said the Canadian| National Railways is reporte to have prepared an estimate of the cost of extending a line from Brule, Alta., 100 miles north- west to the U.S. steel coal re- serves, The rail-line would be ex- tended if U.S. Steel went yes with plans for #*$50,000,000 cok- ing plant near the reserves. Mr Gaylen proposed a further ex- tension of the line to the gyp- sum deposit. He said Native Minerals was completing negotiations with Mountain Gypsum Ltd. to ac- quire a 50 per cent interest in the deposit. The deposit is about 250 miles northwest of Edmon- ton in the Rocky Mountains foot- hills at the Alberta-British Co- lumbia bordre, NOT ECONOMICAL Development of the gypsum deposit had not been economical because of transportation prob- lems, Mr. Jones said. "The completion of the rail extension would make this deposit access- ible and economically feasible to supply the Alberta market and would probably make gyp- sum available at a cheaper price to Alberta industry." Mr. Jones said the deposit is only 40 miles northeast of Loos, B.C., a point on the CNR line not go ahead with its coking plant. Gypsum is used in the build- ing and constructicn trades as a constituent of wallboard, lath, insulating material, wall plas- ter and whitewash, Plaster and wallboard now are manufactured by Calgary firms using gypsum from B.C. and Manitoba. Mr. Jones said the main out- crop of the Alberta deposit is about 3,000 feet long and 540 feet wide, He said the deposit "'is of ex- tremely high quality and has a remarkable uniformity." jphone and aluminium % each, Moore Corporation %. tia, Toronto - point, Canadian Oil % and nadian Husky %4.
