SPEER JONES neey" s lesson is devoted en- tirely to the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem. We have very little description of this edifice, compared to the first magnificent temple, built by Solomon. We do know, however, that despite the years of work and frustration involved in its achievement, it could not com- pare in splendor to the first temple, a masterpiece of Phoe- nician artistry. Yet it had a spiritual splendor, one resulting from the chastisement of the exile and eventual devotion with which the temple was rebuilt. daily living began to steal all their time and energy and de- votion away from the goal to which they had dedicated them- selves. At the same time, their ene- mies sought first to help them, then, being refused, sought to discourage them, hiring couin- selors against them "to frus- trate their purpose," (Ezra 4:4-5). These two factors com- bined effectively to bring work on the temple to a_ standstill. There it remained for almost 18 years,. from soon after 538 B.C. until the second year in the reign of Darius of Persia (520 B.C.), when Haggai first GOLDEN TEXT "Ezra Reading the Law in "Let us go at once to entreat the favor of the lord and to seek the Lord of hosts." -- Ze the Hearing of the People" chariah 8:21. W M.---SUNDAY SC L M.--WORSHIP SERVICE Although we have no Old Tes- tament book recording the his- tory of the Jews in exile (Daniel) -; and Ezekiel being prophetical books rather than histories), we have both history and prophecy during the return and rebuilding period. The histories are those of Ezra and Nehemiah;. the pro- hecies are those of Haggai and Fochariat. Our lesson includes excerpts from all except Nehe- miah. Of Haggai we know nothing. We know only that God com- missioned him, the first of the post-exilic prophets, to rouse the people to complete their labors on the temple. Zechariah then concentrated on completing the spiritual change in the people which ac- companied their building. He was a member of one of the 12 priestly families which returned from Babylon. The history of the, rebuilding, >driefly, was this: Cyrus of Per- sia, who became world ruler in 538 B.C., issued that same year a proclamation encouraging the Jews to return and rebuild the temple. They began with great zeal, commencing services at the restored altar and laying! the foundation stones for the new building almost as soon as they arrived. In good times, his voice would probably thave spoken in vain. Records show, however, that the Jews drought; they were sufficiently demoralized to listen to what Haggai had to say. (CP) -- Fisheries supervisor Andy Murray sees no reason why a 10foot sturgeon shouldin't make a good pet. "We've seen sturgeon teth- ered to a stake with a rope passed through the mouth and out from the gill. The fish can be kept almost like a pet." The Fraser River from here to Hope, 90 miles east, is crowded with sturgeon of all sizes--one was 2 feet long and weighed 1,800 pounds, Sturgeon will eat almost any kind of meat. It's docile and doesn't appear to mind if it is handled now and then. It's easy enough to transport your fish home and into the swimming pool because, kept away from direct sunlight, they stay alive for up to 24 hours. How about steaks?
