Lanoway -- Bawden nell, won the $9,645 Clarendon Stakes at Woodbine Wednesday. Prince Bubi defeated Bridal Music by a head while Cane. pora finished third, four lengths behind the winner. It was the fourth win in eight starts for Prince Bubi and the first money of $5,895 raised his earnings to $10,730. Parnell rode the mount when Sam McComb retired for the afternoon after a four - horse spill in the second race. Jockey Dick Annesley was taken to hospital for treatment of a pos- sible fracture after the accident! but McComb, Cliff Potts and| Gordon Lanoway escaped with minor bruises and contusions. Kate Kirk, ridden by Annesley, broke her 'right rear fetlock and fell about three furlongs from the finish. She had to be des- troyed. Sandy Sugar, Gray Ben and Mac's Trophy fell over Kate Kirk. Prince Bubi paid $9:50 straight as he ran the 5% fur- longs in 1:05 4-5. Beau Purple Sets Record In Upset Win NEW YORK (AP)--Outsider Beau Purple broke on top and stole the race from heavily-fa- vored Kelso and Carry Back Wednesday to set a track rec- ord in winning the $105,200 Su- burban Handicap at Aqueduct. Kelso, the 3-to-5 favorite, fin- ished second, 24% lengths back, and Carry Back, a 9-to-5 second choice, wound up last in the four-horse field. Garwol was third. Jockey Bill Boland was aboard Beau Purple, one of two lightweights in the small field contesting the 76th running of the 14-mile holiday classic. The 2:01 1-5 track record for the dis- tance set by Sword Dancer when he won the $100,000 Wood- ward Stakes Sept. 24, 1960. Because of the small field there was no show wagering. Beau Purple returned $12.60 to win and $4.70 to place. Kelso, ridden by Willie Shoemaker, re- turned $2.90 to place. WINS HANDICAP At Hollywood Park, Ingle- wood, Calif., Prove It knocked off the front runners and his run- ning mate, Olden Times, to win the $55,350 American Handicap. Second-place Windy Sands returned $5.60 and $4 and Harpie paid $6.40 to show. | Before the first race, Mr. and| Mrs. Errle Davis won out in a bidding duel to claim Sporty Boy for $6,500, only to see the colt drop dead after the race was run.
