2 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Soturdey, June 30, 1962 | GOOD EVENING By JACK GEARIN ICNIC TO DRAW 30,000 -- SMITH CP piesldeat Malcolm Smith of Local 222, UAW-CLC, doesn't often go out on a limb and make predictions, but he did just oday: ee cradliied that the 16th annual picnic of the Local-- iuled for Saturday, July 14 in Lakeview Park -- will draw a crowd in excess of 30,000. What's the reason? "It's because of the in- crease in our membership ranks the past 12 months," he said. "We're somewhere around 12,700 now and that's up 2,000 from last year. Don't forget some of our members bring as many as five and six children." Mr. Smith and his execu- tive staff are busy making plans for a crowd that size and have included such items as the following on the menu: 3,200 dozen Dixie cups of ice cream; 750 cases of po- tato chips( 36 bags in each case); 1,900 cases of pop; 12,000 sticks of candy floss. There will be the usual draw for a Chevrolet and Pontiac. The budget has been set MALCOLM SMITH at approximately $15,000. Mr. Smith (not ordinarily an effusive man) waxes elo- quent these days when he talks about the July. 14 picnic, its many attractions and potential size. The big show will be held July 21, rained out on the previous date. FITTINGS MAN HAS UNIQUE RECORD What a record this is! Fred Reid, of the maintenance department at Fittings Lid., retired Friday after 38 years of consecutive service. He was never late, absent or ill in that time. He is 70 . The Board of Transport Commis- sioners said this week that there is yet no indication when its decision will be available regarding the removal of the King street CNR tracks in Oshawa (as proposed by the City). The Board sat here for two days Jast March to hear the City's application MAYOR THOMAS PLANS VISIT IN ABERDEEN Mayor Christine Thomas and her husband, T. D. my' Thomas will leave by air July 16 for a four-week over- seas holiday. Her Worship will visit in Aberdeen, her former home town before she came to Canada in 1929; "Tommy" will also spend some time in Cardiff, Wales, his former hme town. .. . Alderman Albert V. Walker and his wife will also fly Juliy 16 for a 30-day tour of the Continent -- he is chair- man of the property committee. . . . Douglas Crosley, son of Mr. and. Mrs. F. L: Crosley, of 792 Grierson avenue, will be featured each Tuesday at 4 p.m. on Channel 6--CBC-TV on "Swing Along'. He sings popular songs and has a three- month contract for this show. . . . Oshawa's two public swim- ming pools are scheduled to open Monday, according to Wes Ogden of CRA. The new Rotary pool is definitely ready to open, but some work must be completed on the Somerset pool (in the way of new filters) but no delay was expected. COUNCIL MOVES WITH HASTE ON CENTRE PLAN There is no desire here to attempt to throw cold water on the proposed upcoming marriage between City Council and the hard-working, four-man group known as the Oshawa Mem- orial Centre executive committee. The latter has been trying to woo the former into the arena and .community centre business in a big way. It's been doing a pretty fair job, according to advance notices. Rarely does Council move with such haste. The marriage will be officially solemnized Tuesday night in open Council, under the lights, unless, of course, several of the principals suffer a drastic change of heart, which is unlikely. The merger will bring joy to the hearts of many, but there could be some real pitfalls ahead. The committee will likely get the green light to go ahead and embark on its $1,000,000 fund-raising campaign (which appears to be reasonably certain of success) -- if the commit- tee could turn the centre over to the City debt-free, the latter would then act as owner-operator and thus be financially responsible for all annual deficits, regardless of size. In an age when sizeable community centre deficits are the rule rather than the exception, this can be an alarming thought. Oshawa definitely needs an arena, even a community centre of the kind proposed, and there has been plenty of vocal support for such a project these last few months. The City is growing. Many 'of our hockey players and skaters must travel elsewhere for ice. The Boston Bruins have prom- ised a strong junior "A" club to carry the City's colors. There areo ther valid and attractive reasons This does not alter the fact that Council should proceed with extreme caution Tuesday before it commits the over- burdened taxpayers to an expenditure that could be heavy Oshawa needs such a centre (as it needs various other essen- tial services) -- the question is: Can it afford to pay for it ifthings go wrong financially? It is easy to paint a rosy, enthusiastic picture about the community centre and arena business today if the over-all provincial picture is ignored The Peterborough Memorial Centre had a dificit pf ap- proximately $23,000 last year; it is bound to get worse before it gets better in this TV age Delegates at the annual convention of the Ontario Arena Association in Kingston last week were constantly reminded of one grim fact -- it is becoming increasingly difficult to Operate at a profit during the summer months, even with strong attractions as Don Messer and His Jubilees (who drew a disappointing 600 in Oshawa last week) and Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians. More than 9 percent of the civic-owned arenas in On- tario today operate under an annual deficit, some of which are sizeable (Belleville's was $11,500 last year) Guelph Memorial Centre operated in-the black last year only because of one thing -- its bingo revenue. Should the overburdened taxpayers of Oshawa be com- mitted to such a hazardous financial undertaking before they ia had a good opportunity to study the project care- uly? There is a need for extreme caution. The Bruins held a heart-warming, good-will dinner here Wednesday. City Council held a special meet Tuesday to discuss the commit- tee's proposal -- more than likely it will be passed Tuesday. Has Council studied the. matter long enough?
