14 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesdey, June 27, 1962 SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR 'Everything From Soup To Nuts' LAST NIGHT'S doubleheader at Alexandra Park once again gave local soffball fans a real treat, with MacLean's Esso scoring a win over the Pic-O-Mats and Heffering's win- ning a 1-0 thriller over Scugog Cleaners Juniors. This was the second-straight defeat for the Pic-O-Mats, who up until last Thursday were undefeated in the Major League competition. The nip-and-tuck battle between Scugogs and Heffering's was another of those fine softball battles that have been cropping up almost every night in this year's doubleheaders. There's another doubleheader at Alexandra Park tomorrow night with Cobourg appearing in the second half. Tonight ,it's Beaches League, Eddie Black's vs Tony's. KING WHYTE, well-known outdoors sports writer arid To- ronto commentator, died suddenly last night, of a heart attack, at a resort lodge, in Québec's Laurentide Park, near Quebec. They were at the lodge to prepare a film for Whyte's TV show. His passing takes from the scene one of the members of the fairly recent group of outdoors writers, well-informed fishing and hunting enthusiasts who have been doing much to promote interest in conservation, as well as enthusiasm for outdoor recreation. Until Tuesday night it was Wild Man Wilson. Now it's No Hit Wilson. The hulkifig, unassuming Wil- son became the first Negro to itch an American League no- itter as he fast-balled Boston Red Sox to a 2-0 victory over Los Angeles Angels at Fenway Park. The 25 - year - old right- hander gave up four walks but only two Los Angeles runners got as far as second base. He faced 31 batters. Wilson, who packs 220 pounds on a muscular 6-foot-3 frame, finally was rewarding manager Mike Higgins and others who never lost faith in his great speed and pitching ability. Wildness had always been Earl's downfall. After a while he began aiming the ball, being too careful not to walk batters, and got progressively worse. All told, just 21 runs in six games--and four shutouts. Like Belinsky, Wilson was an unlikely candidate for pitching stardom at the season's start. He had been unimpressive in two previous short stays with the Red Sox--in 1959 and 60-- and was no betier than 9-14 with Seattle of League last. year. FAILED TO GO DISTANCE This season the strapping, 25- year-old Louisianan had failed to go the distance in his nine previous starts although he had done well enough to win five of seven decisions.
