CHAS, H, REESOR PORT PERRY -- The cul- mination of many years of frus- tration, sacrifice and hardships reached a climax when the Port Perry Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 419, held the official opening and dedication of its new building at the cor- ner of Simcoe and Bay streets on Saturday, June 16. A crowd of well over 1,200 congregated at the Town Hail corners to either form up for the parade or be interested bystanders Under the leadership of pa- rade marshall John L. Sweet- man, many members of the local branch along with out-of- town guests from the various branches and auxiliaries marched off at 1.30 p.m., ac- companied by three bands -- Bowmanville Canadian Legion Fife "and Drum Band, Cale- donia Pipe Band of Oshawa and the Port Hope Ganadian Legion Fife and Drum Band-- to the Port Perry Memorial Library. The By was in charge of Sergeant Cedric Smith. Upon arrival, the Words of Rememberance were given by District Commmander A. Burgess and the Last Post and Reveille were played by Comrade E. Foster Mrs. Frank Staple of Port Perry, a Silver Cross mother, accompanied by the guard of honor, Provincial President Clarence Wood, Regiona! Vice- President Dude Hills and Dis- trict Commander A. Burgess, entered the library and placed a wreath at the base of the niche holding the Book of Remembrance HONOR OLD HALL After re-assembling, the pa- rade marched around thegtown paying a last tribute to the old Legion hall and continuing on to the new building. Woolcock, COM, CD (Cross of Merit, Ist class with swords, Poland) of St. Mark's Church, Oshawa, who laid the corner- stone of the new Royal Cana- dian Legion Hall in Port Perry The guest speaker was Pro- Provincial President C1 arence Wood, of Toronto. The Reeve of Port Perry, J. J. Gibson thanked the members of the local branch for their generos- ity in presenting the town with the old Legion quarters. DANCE HELD To complete the huge cele- bration, a dance was held in the hall in the evening.
