SPORT FROM BRITAIN Dexter Aristocratic But Good Cricketeer LONDON (CP) -- Lord Ed- ward adjusted his cap to a jaunty angle, pulled gloves over his perfectly manicured fingers and advanced to the wicket. An hour or so later he re- turned after knocking up a spirited 79 for a representative cricket team against Pakistan. Next day he was nominated as England captain for the first Test against the tourists. Ted Dexter, despite his nick- name, has no connections with the peerage. When sportswrit- ers first clapped eyes on the aristocratic features and ele- gant saunter they couldn't re- sist the blueblood tag. Dexter is the answer to the cricket fan's prayer. In con- trast with the current trend, the 25 - year - old Sussex batsman has an irresistible flair for at- tack. With the carefree air of a Regency. buck, he cuts, smashes and sweeps his way through the best that English bowlers can throw at him. Last year he finished the season with an average 29.56 runs per in- nings -- way down the national list but probably the term's most attractive hitter. UPSETS OLDSTERS Sometimes at a crucial stage in a match he misses and the greybeards mumble into their pints about the careless, irre- sponsible younger generation. But with the action - starved cheap - seat audience he can do no wrong. The fun - loving odd man out in a long line of orthodox Eng- land skippers was born in Mi- lan, Italy. He was educated at fashionable Radley College and Cambridge University. His status is amateur al- though he admits to having no outside work other than "dabbl- ing in insurance." Also his lean, sun - tanned profile frequently adorns advertisements for a debonair shaving cream. His. interests outside cricket are golf, at which he is nearly up to international standard, fast cars and horse racing. He started in big-time cricket as a freshman at Cambridge. After graduation he joined Sus- sex and became skipper of that county when Rev. David Shep- pard retired. TWO OTHER CHOICES His international experience is limited for an England cap- tain. His first outing was against New Zealand in 1958 and since then he has toured Australia and last winter led the England team which gave a poor showing in a tour of India and Pakistan. The selectors have two other candidates in line for the Eng- land captaincy--Sheppard, back out of retirement after running an Anglican mission in Lon- and Kent's Cuica Cowdrey. These may ge don's dockland, a chance in later Tests. The critics mainly plump for Sheppard, who captained the national team twice in 1954. They feel he has more authority on the field than Dexter and is more reliable in a tight situa- Revises LONDON (Reuters) -- A for- mer British boxing champion has devised a pneumatic boxing glove to reduce the risk of crippling, or even fatal, brain injuries to professional boxers. Eric Boon, a 42 - year - old businessman, says he has tested his glove by punching a brick wall and has felt no jolt in his hand or wrist. Boon, who won the British lightweight championship before the Second World War when he was only 19, knocked out 50 of his opponents. It was the sight of some of them in later years that led him to invent his glove. The glove has two air com- partments, one inside the other. The first shock of a blow is Former Champ Glove absorbed by the outer compart- ment and, if the blow is a hard one, by the inner compartment. PUFF-BALL BOXING Would the public pay to watch "puff - ball" boxing with gloves like Boon's? He thinks so. 'Nowadays there is so much holding after a boxer has been hit and dazed that the fight often becomes a shambles. "With my gloves, boxers would be able to keep exchanging blows and hit back to the last round -- it would be a more exciting fight for the specta- tors," Boon says. Interest in Boon's glove was aroused in Britain after the Gene Fullmer And Pender Get NBA Go Ahead PITTSBURGH (AP) -- The middleweight title - deciding fight between Gene Fullmer and Paul Pender will have the National Boxing Association's blessing after all. The NBA said Friday it is "very happy" that the two title claimants will meet at Boze- man, Mont., Aug. 28 to settle the muddle. Fullmer, of West Jordan, THE OSHAWA TIMES, Sgturday, June 9, 1962 9] Utah, is recognized as world champion by the NBA and Pen- der, of Brooklyn, Mass., is con- sidered the king of the 180- pound set by New York, Mas- sachusetts, Europe and other parts of the world. Apparently the NBA's ruling] to Fullmer last Wednesday that thad he to defend his title by Aug. 5 and against Dick Tiger of Nigeria was a result of a misleading. The edict was is- sued by Paul Sullivan, chair- man of the NBA's world cham- pionship committee, but with- out the approval of Dr. Charles P. Larson, NBA president. Queen's Plate May Have Photo Finish By JACK SULLIVAN Canadian Press Sports Editor Long - memoried fans recall a race at the Fort Erie track in Ontario a year ago that ended in a four - horse photo finish. As the railbirds say, a running nose separated each of the four. The pictures showed Choper- ion the winner, followed by Peters Chop, Flaming Page and Sun Dan. The frisky two-year- olds never did get together again for another whirl, but that time is coming and in a setting and under circum- stances that would be natural for a script writer. The long - awaited reunion' is set for next Saturday. The race happens to be the 103rd_ run- ning of the $75,000 Queen's Plate, a classic for Canadian- bred three - year - olds and the most colorful and crowd-appeal- ing event on the Canadian rac- ing calendar. All four are eligible. Their owners have paid out the neces- the winner. The big payoff, nearly $50,000, comes later. About 12 horses are expected a juvenile and won five. And he has won all three starts this year, including a decision over to go to the post and word from|King Gorm, His earnings so the bettors, who make the form chart their bible, is that you needn't look for another photo- finish. Sun Dan, they say, is the horse to beat, along with King Gorm, a $35,000 beauty owned by mining man Jim Boylen of Toronto. But Sun Dan, owned by Wil- fred J. Farr, a long - ago la- crosse player in his home town of Weston, just outside of Tor- onto, hasn't given observers much to go on this year. And, according to gossip, the bay son of Ardan and Sun Talent will pass up Monday's Queen's Plate trials and wait for the Plate itself to show his stuff. TOOK OUTSIDE ROUTE Sun Dan started 12 times as far total $28,734--$20,432 earned in 1961 and $8,302 this year. Trainer Bill Thurner is going for his second Plate victory. He saddled long - shot Paolita back in 1943, The filly, with Jockey Pat Remillard aboard, paid $76.50. That's the race that Remil- lard -- now 56 and still an ac- tive rider -- remembers most. The track was muddy and on the morning of the Plate Remil- lard went for a walk and dis- covered that the going was by far the best along the outside rail, especially from the three- eighths pole home. That afternoon Remillard took the filly wide in the stretch and made a galloping finish "TAG TUESDAY, JUNE 12th | Brown's Fullback Sued For Divorce CLEVELAND (AP) -- Jim star fullback for Cleveland Browns of the Na- Brown, REMEMBER WHEN... ?
