New Book On Churchill Outlines Valiant Years One of the most compact but far-reaching accounts of the whole panorama of the Second World War -- from the miracle of Dunkirk to the rape of War- saw, from the dark corridors of the Kremlin to the embattled heroes of Corregidor -- is in- cluded in a new book "WIN- STON CHURCHILL: THE VAL- IANT YEARS" by Jack LeVien and John Lord (Random House of Canada Ltd.), The mighty role portrayed by one man, on whose shoulders fell the deadly weight of leader- ship in the darkest days of the conflict -- Sir Winston Churchill is vividly portrayed with dramatic intensity, fine re- search, and in a manner that holds the reader's attention until the end. The greatest conflict in the history of mankind is recorded here on the vast panorama it deserves. Here are recorded some of the secret conferences between Roosevit, Stalin and Churchill; here also is the drama unfolding at the skirl of the pipes at Alamein, Stalin told Churchill bluntly that the English were afraid of the Germans and would never fight. Churchill swallows his pride and patiently starts an outline of the plans for Opera- tion Torch in North Africa, As he lists its military advantages THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, June 6, 1962 25 Stalin grows more and more in- terested. It' was Sir Winston's calm patience and stimulating oratory, when the chips were down, that helped keep the Soviet Premier in line during a tense period. FAST FRIENDS The book tells how Churchill became fast friends with the two American generals, Eisenhower and Clark -- the bond was at- trib¥ted in no little way to their liking for Irish stew, a dish of which the Prime Minister was inordinately fond. This book records the tears and the laughter, the heroism the glory and the senseless- ness of war, the pageantry, the black ruin, the excitement, the despair. As the dust jacket says: 'Here is the palpable taste of war. Here in dramatic readable form, is the story of how Winston Churchill achieved immortality in his own life- time." This book deserves a prom- inent place in the Churchill li- brary, sheds much new light on one of the greatest figures in history. It should be read, en- joyed immensely and treasured, HISTORY OF AFRICA One of the better books to be published on Africa recently is "A HISTORY OF AFRICA -- SOUTH OF THE SAHARA" by Professor Donald L. Wiedner of Statistics Give Food For Thought OTTAWA (CP)--Unless you had more than a passing in- terest in figures, chances are you'd never know that: In 1960 there was a Cana- dian groom over 80 with a bride under 16. Nobody died of yellow fever in Canada that year. Of the 266 women who com- mitted suicide, 174 were mar- ried. The 1960 report of vital sta- tistics by the bureau of sta- tistics has all sorts of nug- gets of knowledge you're not apt to overhear at a hockey game. Where else, for instance, could you learn that one mother in the 30-34 age group gave birth to her 19th child, and another in the 25 - 29 group gave birth to her 16th. The Yukon has never had a divorce. The Northwest Terri- weighed more than pounds, five ounces. The married women with the highest birth rate were those 24 years old, In the un- married class, they were 19. The religious denomination with the fewest weddings was the Spiritualist Church--with eight. The Roman Catholic Church had the most--60,724, While the Yukon was alone in its class for lack of di- vorces, it also headed the field in the list of oldest brides. Up there, the average age was 26.8. The youngest were in Newfoundland at 22,8. But these statistics don't seem to mean much when it comes to divorces. The New- foundland rate of 1.3 per 100,- 000 population was second only to the Yukon's zero. British Columbia, in a class by itself, had a divorce rate tories increased its divorces by 200 per cent--to three. Four Canadian moth. ers were only 12 years old, Sixteen of them were 50 and over. Four Canadian babies of 99.1 per 100,000. If there is one clear char- acteristic in this great vol- ume of digits, it's the non- conformity of the residents of the Northwest Territor- ies. the University of Alberta (Ran- dom House of Canada Ltd.), Despite what some scholars may say, Africa has a history of its own. There are a number of extremely valuable written ac- counts and chronicles -- many by Arab travelers or scholars, a few by Negro Africans in Arabic -- that shed light on events in parts of East and West Africa below the Sahara. In some cases, as this book points out, these reach back more than 10 centuries before the arrival|] of modern Europeans. es This book provides a modern appraisal of the forces that shaped a continent through the impact of an alien world -- ft is illustrated with 35 maps, Our ignorance of the history of this Dark Continent is amazing, But just as scholarship has replaced lack of knowledge concerning the Dark Ages, so today some of the world's top historians are drawing into the light the amaz- ing and moving story of life in Africa, Professor Wiedner can be proud of his achievement in the writing of this book -- he is one of the young scholars who has taken the mystery out of Africa. His interpretations of| the historical background are| superb. He has also achieved) a comprehensive, lucid view of} the vast subject. In a well-| organized framework of periods and places, he has provided a} wealth of detail about people} and events which have shaped the course of Africa's history and now, increasingly, the his- tory of other parts of the world. This book is indispensable to} the student of Africa, the read-| er interested in contemporary history -- it is more than an important reference book, it is a highly entertaining account of the history of a country that is increasingly in the headlines to- day. This is a historical synthesis and interpretation of life in Africa, from prehistoric times to the recent acquisitions of political independence. It is the first time that a chronicle of such scope and depth has been) undertaken in this field for study. It is a book to be read and treasured, Mg me ama Va ASLEEP Daye.
