WHITBY SPORTS PARADE By GERRY BLAIR One of the finest, painstaking developed golf courses in this area is the Whitby Golf and Country Club at Ash- burn. Lloyd Robertson, Whitby Times Bureau manager and myself spent an enjoyable afternoon yesterday viewing the 152-acre, 6,918-yard long landscaped masterpiece escorted by genial host pro, Wilson Paterson. Our pleasant excursion around the spacious lay-out took place aboard one of their electric golf carts which just arrived yesterday. These battery-driven vehicles will be a welcome addition for people who suffer from tired feet. For those of you who would rather tow your clubs along behind, the G and C Club is well-equipped with approximately 40 manual-carts, Most golf courses are content to open for business with nine holes of bare necessities, but not so with Pater- son's Whitby course, in its first complete year. (It actually got off the ground in late September last year.) The greens are in near-excellent condition, aided by a special sprinkler system at each green, tee and along all 18 fair- ways. The 18th green is a sight to behold. Although the diameter is not known, Paterson considers it the largest in Ontario County. Whatever your preference, long or short holes, the Whitby Golf and Country Club offers a generous variety. For the long ball hitters, how about number 14 as an example from the furthest tee (in due time -- three tees for each hole) 596 yards; No. 1 ,528, No. 3, 511, No. 15, 467, No. 17, 525 yards. And of course enough short holes, in the 150, or-so yards' category, to make it interest- ing. © In discussing membership etc., Paterson said, "'We are off to a good start with already 140 members, and our eventual target is 350, at which time it then would un- doubtedly become a private course. Membership is $150 for men, which includes $50 initiation fee, husband and wife, $190, and as an added incentive to encourage younger gentlemen under 26 years of age to join we offer a member- ship to them for $125, which includes $35 initiation fee." Pay-as-you-play rates are $2 on week-days and $3 weekends and holidays. A special Golf Clinic and Exhibition round will be held at the Whitby G and C Club on Sunday, June 3 at 2 p.m., featuring three top Canadian professionals -- Moe Norman, from Kitchener, Bob Panasiuk, from Windsor, and Alvie Thompson, from Winnipeg. This is a perfect opportunity for golf efficiandos in Ontario County to acquire a pointer or two during the hour-long demonstration from these fine performers, Admission is free, and following the clinic, which will include trick-shots by Moe Norman, the trio will get down to serious competition for prize money sup- plied by the host golf club, in an 18-hole play-off which should prove: exceptionally entertaining for the gallery -- a definite rarity in these parts. Directions for reaching the Whitby Golf and Country Club are: north on highway twelve to Myrtle, then west on through Ashburn about one-half mile. Y Home League | Weekly Meet Salvation Army Women's) Home League held its weekly) meeting on Thursday at the) Citadel with Mrs. A. Carr and} her group in charge of the de-| votional.
