SOCCER TWIN-BILL Wednesday evening in the Sta- dium, in spite of the rains, an- other Oshawa and District Soc- cer Assoc. double-header was played, with Kickers defeating Hungaria by 4-1 while Ukrainia and Rangers, in the second game, tied at 1-1. Although playing under rough conditions, and on a slippery field, all the teams gave a good account of themselves. The first match, ending at 4-1 for Kick- ers, was not one-sided by any means and was a battle all the way. Three of the goals were spaced at one minute intervals, at the close of the first half, but they were enough to decide the game. Hungaria's weakness is in the forward line, and with a player or two to give them punch around the net, they will be a stronger team, Their defence has been very sound and none of the goals scored against them have been flukes. Some tall "body English" did the trick for Kickers, with Wil- liams and Laidlaw sharing the goals at two each. The side-line goal judges had plenty to cheer about in both games as all the goals were perfectly done. At fourteen minutes, Williams scored a beauty for Kickers, with a long high lob and at thirty-six minutes he headed his second into the net, to give his team a 2-0 lead. This only lasted one minute, when with Kickers' defence tied in knots around their own goal, Fenyves booted home a goal for] -- In the second period, although two down, Hungaria were deter- mined to get even but they had no luck whatsoever, even though they had their share of chances. At thirty-six minutes of the period, Laidlaw again scored what was the last goal of the game, to salt away the two points for Kickers. GOOD TIE GAME Ukrainia and Rangers put on a splendid display in the second game. and, although Ukrainia were classier and smoother in their team-work, they failed to master the flying Rangers, who made up in determination for what they lack in skill and got a tie because of it. This was a hard struggle all| the way and it took twenty min-| utes for a goal to materialize. | At this point, L. Choloniuk, one of the few "'originals" left in the league, labelled the ball and mailed it direct with a booming shot, on Which Ran-| gers' goalie had no. chance; whatever, a tremendous goal| which put Ukrainia in front. | This made the Rangers sag| somewhat but they held on for} the rest of the period and kept | the hard-pressing opposition} from increasing their lead. | At eighteen minutes of the second half, Ritchie tied the game with a genuine crowd-| pleaser of a goal, a long, high/ shot that was marked '"'goal'"' all the way in. The game started anew on even terms, and although| THE OSHAWA TIMES, Friday, Mey 25, 1962 7§ Ukrainia came close several times, one shot bouncing off the post, they had to be content with the single point. If the rest of the season con- tinues at this pace, then it may very well be the closest-fought season so far, with single goals deciding games, and this of course makes it far more inter- esting for the fans. Two Labatt Awards made, one after each game, an in this it proved to be a good night for centre-halves. This award, which is proving to be an excellent feature this season, for the star of the game, and were Kickers Top Hungaria; Ukrainia Ties Rangers at the same time giving keen competition to the players, was won by centre-half Gerry Kea of Rangers and centre-half Rein- hold App, of Kickers, who play- ed outstandingly for their teams, ; FUTURE GAMES Wednesday, May 30: Rangers vs. Kickers at 8.00 and on Fri- day, June 1: Hungaria vs. Polonia at 8.00.
