Newcastle Protects Water NEWCASTLE -- The village has spent $838 to save its muni- cipal water supply from pollu- tion. At council's May meeting it decided io purchase a Wilmot street lot which adjoins the vil- lage well. It was recommended to coun- cil by the Ontario Water Re- sources Commission that it take this step to protect the water supply. The land was owned by Percy Allin, who had planned to build a house on the site, complete with septic tank for sewage. BROKEN SIDEWALK HASSLE Courtice Detour Causes Accidents BOWMANVILLE (St ff) -- A sore spot in the OPP Bow- manville detachment's _ terri- tory is the detour on Highway 401 at the Courtice road inter- section. The detachment reported two minor accidents during the holi- day weekend, both occurring at this detour. Hockey Mothers Name Executive By MRS. A. L, HOOEY BOWMANVILLE The Hockey Mothers held their final meeting until September recent- ly. The meetings have all been in the Lions Centre and a don- ation was given to the Lions Club for the use of the room. During the afternoon the bers ded Pee Wee All John Heailie complained to council that he was always be- ing persecuted and that some- body was "always looking for something to blame me for." He said he didn't intend to fix a broken sidewalk in front of his partially constructed . build- ing on King street until "You can prove I broke it." Mr, Heatlie said there are other broken sidewalks in the vil- lage and didn't see why he should be singled out. GRANT PERMITS Village council has granted two building permits for single family dwellings. One went to Star socks and sweaters. TWIN COUNTIES COMMENT Fireworks Display Financial Bonfire Reporter) "The 24th of May is the Queen's birthday. If we don't get a holiday we'll all run away." Remember that little ditty: It was the standatd chant about this time of year for school) children begging for a holiday to celebrate Queen Victoria's birthday. Many of them didn't know who she was and couldn't care less as long as they got time to set off some firecrackers. And after all, any excuse for a holi- day would be welcomed by the small-fry set. But a few years ago ,the chil- dren were satisfied with just a handful of crackers and the holiday. They knew better than to ask for any more. However, children of today ask for the moon, and nine times out of 10 they get what they want: anywhere from $10 president, Mrs. W. Simpson; first vice-president, Mrs. R .L. Worden; secretary, Mrs. George Cawker; treasurer, Mrs. Ronald Alder; phone commit- to $50 worth of firecrackers to let off themselves. Then they beg to go and see the giant fireworks. I wonder how many millions of dollars of firecrackers went up in smoke last night? Money that could be put to better use than satisfy the childish whims of our children. Do'you think that the Rus- sians would waste their re- sources this way? They are probably saving their gunpow- der to blow us sky high, rather than for their own enjoyment. Last night Bowmanville adults and children were "'treat- ed" to a_ gigantic fireworks display behind the high school. This exciting event was spon- sored by the Bowmanville Ro- tary Club, and concluded with the patriotic shower of sparks depicting the picture of Queen Elizabeth I. Cost of the fireworks -- $750. And it isn't even Queen Eliza- beth's birthday. As a matter of fact this holiday we call '"Vic- toria Day" isn't even celebratl ed in England. Unit Nine Receives Donation By MRS. A. L. HOOEY BOWMANVILLE -- Unit 9 of | Trinity United Church Women" met at the home of Mrs. How- = Jeffrey for the May meet- zg. A donation to the unit was received from the family of the. late Mrs. Milton Jamieson who . was a valued member of the unit for many years and enjoy- ed the meetings. Unit 6 invited Unit 9 to a pot luck supper on Monday, June 4 in the church and to provide part of the program. The members were asked to save nylon stockings. 33 Babies Born At Ajax Hospital AJAX--A total of 243 patients were admitted to the Ajax-Pick-| ering General Hospital during the month of April, a hospital) report stated today.
