Rundle Rundle's Garden Centre, Oshawa An aanual is a plant that completes its life within one year; that is, it grows from seed and flowers and dies in one year. There are many ways in which annuals can be: used to improve the beauty of a home A new home can use annuals for temporary beauty until a permanent planting of ever- greens and shrubs can be es- tablished. In more established plantings, annuals can be used in perennial borders to add col- or throughout the summer when perennials are not as colorful, since most perennials are spring blooming. Low growing annuals are also very useful in the rock garden for summer color. In the foundation planting of evergreens and shrubs, the proper choice of annuals and pot plants, such as geraniums or tuberous begonias can add color and life to the front of your home from May until Oc- tober. Flowering shrub borders and group plantings can be made more attractive by use of annuals until the shrubs are large enough to bloom and to fill the spaces left between. them at time of planting. Many annuals are grown for Annuals Useful In Home Plans use as cut flowers to beautify the inside of the home. These would be best grown in rows in the kitchen garden in order, not to destroy the effect by cutting them from your decora- tion plantings. Probably the most. common use for annuals is in bedding or specially prepared beds for these plants alone. They are also planted on top of tulips or daffodils which have finished blooming. These specially pre- pared beds cane be of various shapes and 'sizes in relation to your property. Plants of one color combination can be used in this way to bring mass color to your garden. Most of these plants can be started indoors from seed but the average gardener will be well advised to buy most of his plants already started. The setting out of these small plants would best be done on a cloudy day or in the late afternoon or evening and should be watered with soluble fertilizer. Although most annuals will grow in average soil you should dig some humus such as peat moss or manure into the soil and add a complete fertilizer which will contain nitrogen phosphoric acid and potash. An- nuals in the most part are fairly free from diseases and in- sects but a made to too late. Some of the best low grow- ing annuals for borders and rock gardens are: white alys- sum, mauve alyssum, agera- tum, lobelia, portulaca, taget tes, French marigolds, pansies and violas, -- Some of the tall varieties for background are: salvia, zinnia, African marigolds, celosia, clle- ome, nicotine and cosmos. Most. annuals are sun loving plants but here are a few you could try in a partial shade: petunias, phlox, pansies, violas, lobelias, celosia, and verbena, For further information on an- nuals just contact your local nurseryman, This article has been written by a local member of the On- tario Nurseryman's Association. Dr. Frye spoke at convoca- tion ceremonies for 183 Queen's university graduates receiving honors, arts and science, com- merce, divinity or graduate de- grees. He said the only heroism ef- fect now is rooted in a capacity to look at society without the blankers of custom and preju- dice and to distrust all our con- ditioned reflexes of politics, re- ligion and class. Without a strong Church, neither democracy nor eivili- zation can survive. There are four sound reasons why every person should attend services: regularly and support the Church. They are: (1) For his own sake, (2) For his children's sake. (3) For the sake of his community and nation. (4) For the sake of the Church itself, which needs his moral and material support.
