They thought it advisable to try to recover the active material if the device was a dud. Jumbo was the answer. Then, as now, a nuclear ex- plosion was triggered by con- ventional explosives. The charce planned for that first one was several thousand pounds. R. W. Carlson was assigned to design a vessel that could contain the force of that much conventional explosive and pre- vent the bomb's plutonium from being scattered across the des- ert in a misfire. Carlson, after considering nu- merous designs and _ testing scale models, came up with the bottle-like Jumbo. It meas- ured 25 feet long and 12 feet in diameter, with walls of steel 15 inches thick. Dr. Marvin H. Wilkening, now head of the physics and geo- physics department at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, said that after Jumbo was built and delivered it was decided there was a bet- ter than 50-50 chance of pro- ducing an explosion. Jumbo was out of a starring role but still in the picture. Just to see what an atomic blast would do to it, Jumbo was hung inside an open steel tower 800 yards from ground zero. The tower was crumpled by the explosion but Jumbo . suf- AUTO WRECKING 89 BLOOR E. PHONE 725-2311 LARGE black purse lost, no tion, white gloves and white make up bag.
