Earlier Thursday, the 27-year- old Titov had yielded a few morsels of information to an in- ternational space science sym- posium: That his Vostok cap- sule was lifted by a multi- stage, six-rocket, liquid - fueled ooster with a thrust more than orga times that of the U.S. At Ss. LANDS AS SPECIFIED He told the scientists of his reported nausea; that he had overslept during that amazing 1961 voyage; that his capsule is designed to split into two parts when it is ready to descend and that he landed by parachute in a specified' area, Reporters eagerly awaited the press conference that was to follow--with Glenn and Titov sitting side by side, swapping tales about their trips. It didn't work out that way. How many stages did his booster have? How did the cap- sule actually land? Did a ring around a model of the capsule indicate a part of the equip- ment or was it merely a carry- ing device? Titov was all smiles. The questioners could be assured, he said, that the equipment was good, the landing was safe and the capsule could be used to fly again. If only the diplomats Titov Frustrates Newsmen In US. mier Khrushchev's disarma- ment plan, then Titov and Glenn could fly off into space together. After some time of this, an Italian correspondent pleaded with Titov to give reporters just one small bit of information-- just on the capsule's landing system. Again Titov smiled and said simply public knowledge of the landing system was not impor- tant; that the questioner could be assured the capsule was not damaged and he, Titov, would be glad to use it again. HITS CAVIAR TRAIL Titov takes a look today at U.S. industry power, then hits the caviar trail at a Soviet dip- lomatiec reception. He travels by car to Baltl- more to inspect the country's biggest steel mill -- Bethlehem Steel's Sparrows Point Works which has the capacity to turn out more steel and more tin than any other plant in the United States. After the tour, Titov goes back to Washington where he will be guest of honor at a dip- lomatic reception at the Soviet Embassy. Thursday the two trail blaz- ers in space seemed to hit it off despite the language barrier while Glenn guided Titov through swarms of tourists on a whirlwind tour of the capital and introduced him to Presi dent Kennedy. Kennedy told Ti- tov "I'm very happy to wel- come you, as are the American people." Glenn and Titov even found time to put their heads toge- ther to solve--to their satisfac- tion--the mystery of the space fireflies. After their chat, Titov re- ported to an international space meeting that "I believe, and I think Col. Glenn is of the same opinion, that they result from fuel being ejected. This will have to be checked out by the would accept Soviet Pre- next cosmonaut."
