TOWN AND COUNTRY THE OSHAWA TIMES, Fridey, Mey 4, 1962 7§ " * t The Town and Country Hock- ey League crowned a brand new champion on Sunday even- ing. Steelworkers skated off with all the honors with a 6-2 victory over the Petes. The ser- ies had gone the limit of five games but Steelworkers had lit- tle trouble winning the crucial game, They led 5-0 by the end of the second period. STEELMEN GRAB LEAD Steelworkers forced the play from the very start of the game. They finally scored late in the period as Duffield poked in a rebound from Craggs and White. They kept up the on- slaught in the second stanza and finally got to Gangemi in the Petes goal who had kept his team in the game with some terrific goaltending. Babin and Tindall counted a couple of quick goals at the five minute mark. C. Huard gained assists on both markers as Mac- Dermaid also helped out on Babin's effort. C. Huard then fired a pair himself before the frame had ended to run the score to 5-0 for the Steelworkers. Petes meanwhile had not been able to organize much of an attack, LATE RALLY TOO LITTLE C. Huard notched his third goal of the contest on a pass from MacDermaid before Petes got going. Steelworkers were nursing a big 6-0 lead at this point allowing Petes to open up. They fired two successive goals. Barta rifled home Love's re- bound and Love came right back on a pass from Bathe for the second marker. The Steelworkers climaxed a drive that carried them from last place to second place in the standings and through two semi- final series with but one loss. They still had the desire left after a two week layoff over Easter to play an inspired game. Petes had stood first in the schedule and took their semi- final series in straight games. They had won the Championship in three of the four previous years. It is also an interesting note that Petes stood second last year and beat out the top team and Steelworkers managed| the same feat this year.
