6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Monday, April 30, 1962 House Painting Steps Outlined So you're ready to start paint- fmg the house! Fine! You've bought the type of quality paint you're going to use in the color ef your choice. You've prepared the wood surface properly. What do you do next? The first thing to do is to paint. the window sash and trim # they are to be a different eolor from the body of the house. The reason for doing these parts first is to avoid having to rest your ladder against the freshly painted sid- ing. For bright, longer-lasting eolors use exterior enamel or special trim paints. Once the windows are taken eare of, you're ready for the body of the house. Stand near the lower right hand corner of the building and see how far to your right you can reach com- fortably without endangering your balance. Here's the place to put your ladder, making sure that it is standing firmly and that its foot is at a distance from the house equal to about ene-quarter of its length. Climb carefully to the top, tot- ing your bucket of paint to which is attached a hook so you ean hang it from a ladder rung. Don't forget your brush -- 3% to 4 inches is the best size -- and a rag saturated with paint thinner to remove spots in case you splash any paint on the newly painted trim. Deposit the paint in several spots and join them together by brushing the paint out in long, sweeping strokes. With horizon- tal siding, paint the bottom of each board first, then double back and paint the face. If the siding is vertical, first paint the grooves between each board, then the face. Use your whole arm and paint with the grain where possible applying the paint from the end of the brush, using both sides of each brushful. Use only enough pressure to curl the end of the bristle slightly. It's a lot easier to paint with a fully loaded brush because a half-dry brush will drag. End your strokes with a grad- wal lifting motion. Always work from a dry area into a wet one and end your strokes with a REED'S HAVE EVERYTHING FOR YOUR GARDEN gradual lifting motion to pre- vent depositing too much pain where the new and just painted areas meet. Obliterate any brush marks with light quick strokes of a nearly dry brush. This will also thin out la marks. Most experts recommend that you work from the top down without moving the ladder. The start at the top again and paint down. Others feel that, it is bet- ter to move the ladder or work from a safe wood platform s that you can paint completely) across the house at each level. This will avoid laps. Try to fin- ish each day's or half day's} painting at a window or a cor- ner, again to prevent lap marks. If you are applying two coats} to wood, wait at least forty- eight hours between coats be- fore starting the new one. If, however, you are using latex! house paint, it can usually be recoated in an hour or so or whatever time specified on the label.
