Check On Hinges Of Balky Doors . One gf the most common and most annoying houséndia ati-| ments is the balky door, which won't open or close properly, or both. There is no one cause for this lack of co-operation. But there is a reasonable chance that the trouble has something to do with the hinges. One or both of them may have come loose. You may not be able to see this at first glance. Don't trust this initial look. Open and close the door at varying degrees of speed several times, looking carefully to see whether there is even the slightest movement of either of the hinges. The movement may be almost im- perceptible, but if it is there, you probably have found the cause of the door's balkiness. Another test is to attempt to turn each of the hinge screws on the door edge and the door pels with a screw-driver. Turn the screwdriver in a clockwise direction. If you are able to turn any of the screws, even the tiniest bit, it means that the screw is not holding proper- ly. Having determined that the trouble is in one of the hinges, the screws in that hinge will have to be reset. Sometimes the use of slightly larger screws will afford temporary relief. But the proper permanent cure is to remove all the screws and fill the holes with wood putty or plastic wood and, when the filler has hardened, replace the hinge and screws. If the old screws are rusted or in poor condition, replace them. If your examination shows no loose screws, the door usually can be restored to working con- dition by placing a piece of cardboard under one of the hinge leaves on the door jamb. This procedure is known as Opening Saves Kitchen Steps The kitchen pass-through could save you a lot of steps. It's simply an opening in the wall through which you can pass food, dishes or the like. Usually it is located between the dining room and the kitchen. It is well to use a sturdy, heat-proof. material like cera- mic tile for the pass-through's serving counter. The counter must have a fireproof surface for safety -- and plenty of dur- ability to stand up under. the constant abuse of hot dishes and pans. Because it's bound to be soiled, your counter should also be easy to clean. These paneled walls, al- ready beginning to shape up, will take on a professionally finished appearance when ail shimming. If the door has been bindige- ot the-tay - ropes ts ine screws. from the top hinge leaf, place the cardboard underneath it and then replace the screws, driving them through the hinge holes into the cardboard and the wood. If the door was bind- ing at the bottom, take this cor- rective measure with the bot- tom hinge leaf. Sometimes a thicker piece of cardboard -- or two pieces of the thinner one -- may be necessary. When a door has been fixed, be sure all edges and ends are painted, varnished and other- wise sealed, especially if any filing or sanding was done. Add- ing .a third hinge to the door, midway between the two others, will give it extra stability and -- the chance of future trou- e.
