16 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thursday, April 26, 1962 RENALD FILION drives Jarretown Dale to victory in the second race at Old Wood- bine Raceway last night and Automatic Timer Fails To Feature Winner TORONTO (CP) -- Old Wood- bine's automatic timing device was unable to declare a win-| ner in the $7,260 Fort Erie Trot Wednesday night before 5,342 patrons, so top honors were di- vided between two owners. The stakes event drew 22 trot- ters and was divided into three divisions, with top honors re- served for the horse with the fastest time in the three races. It turned out the winners of the first and third divisions had identical times of 2:08.4 for the mile. The dilemma was solved by making presentations to both. Silk Boy W., owned by the Laurentian Stable of Rawdon, Que., and driven by Murray Waples, won the first division, the night's fourth race. Van's Pride C., owned and driven by Doug Palmer of Schomberg, Yanks Make Rapid Robin Free Agent NEW YORK (AP) -- Robin Roberts, a 234-game winner for Philadelphia Phillies in the Na- tlonal League, was given his un- conditional release Wednesday by New York Yankees. Roberts» a 35-year-old right- hander, never threw a ball for the Yankees in the regular sea- son. However, in 11 innings of five exhibition games he al- lowed 15 hits and eight runs. The former Phillies whiz kid of the 1950 pennant winners was purchased by the Yanks for $25,000 Oct. 16. His contract was reported to have called for a $29,000 salary. "T regret that I have not been able to pitch Roberts more," said manager Ralph Houk. "It is our feeling that he should have every chance to get an- other job and it.is for that rea- son that we are releasing him at this time" Roberts said: 'I want to stay in baseball as an active player. Naturally, I am a little shocked at this release but I think I am still capable of pitching." delighted backers who had a bet on the long shot got a big payoff return. Owned by Jo- Decide took the third division, the sev- lenth race. The second division, which went as the sixth race, was won by Glenalee, owned by John Graham of Lindsay and piloted by Clarence Hilliard. The mare's time was 2:12.3. In each race, the winners picked up $1,200. The co-champ- ions, Doug Palmer and Murray Waples, also received presenta- tions. A double payoff of $405.20 was in the making when the 3-to-5 choice in the first race broke stride and finished nowhere. This was Miss Riddell, three- year-old filly owned by Hon. Earl Rowe and driven by Bob Silliphant. With Miss Riddell out of contention, Prince X., owned by Albert Defosse of Trenton came down at $17.30. The big payoff was completed by the long shot winner of the second race, Jarretown Dale, owned by Joseph Corbin of Que- bec City, and worth $52.60 for a $2 straight return.
