In case you have to wait several days, then water the ball with water, leaving the evergreens in a cool or shady spot. Dig a hole large enough so that the sides of the hole and the ball of the evergreen are 3 to 4 inches apart. Mix some soil with peatmoss and fill it around the ball. Spread a couple of handfulls of fertilizer around the evergreen and water the soil letting the water soak in two or three times. On hillsides where the beds would wash or when set as specimen in lawns, shrubs may be set into well dug holes in the sod, but for good growth the sod must be kept shaded around the shrub. The hole should be large enough so that the bare roots are not crowded, soil should be loosened up in the bottom of the hole. Spread roots out natur- ally and fill hole with a mixture of peatmoss, sheep manure and soil. Tamp down firmly, and water well.
