This was shown today in a Dominion Bureau of Statistics report which traced the "slow but. persistent growth" of for eign capital to positions of dom- inance in big sectors of Cana- dian industry. Five years earlier, foreign in- vestors had owned 47 per cent of Canadian manufacturing and controlled 51 per cent of it. United States ownership of manufacturing increased to 41 per cent from 37 in those five years 1954 to 1959, and U.. con- ,\trol rose to 44 per cent from 42. The story is similar in other main areas of Canadian indus- try--but not all. UP THREE PER CENT In the petroleum and natural advanced to 63 per cent from 60, and foreign control to 75 pe cent from 69, during the five year period. US. gas industry, foreign ownership} ship share to 59 per cent from 53 and its control to 61 per cent from 51. Here again, U.S. capi- tal predominated. But the picture was reversed in the case of Canada's rail- ways, where foreign ownership dwindled to 27 per cent from 35. Foreign control in this field was only two per cent throughout the period. The report, looking farther back to 1926, said the most strik- ing feature was the consistency of trends throughout depression and boom, war and peace. | Foreign ownership of Cana- |dian manufacturing had 'inched up from 38 per cent in 1926" and foreign ownership of mining and smelting "has also reflected an almost uninterrupted growth from 37 per cent in 1926." CERTAIN FIELDS Foreign control in manufac' turing is concentrated in certain) fields, notably the rubber, auto, | lectrical, chemical and trans- ortation industries. Between 1954 and 1959, foreign! Slow Growth T Of Foreign Investors cals to 77 from 75 per cent and in transportation equipment to 73 from 36 per cent. But in uther industries foreign control is smaller and in some cases declining. In the pulp and paper industry it declined to 4 from 56 per cent. NET EARNINGS Canada Wire and Cable Co, Ltd., year ended Dec. 31: 1961, $849,140, 84 cents a share; 1960, $610,429, 58 cents.
