Back | | | Pickering Approves West Rouge Sewers By ELSA STORRY BROUGHAM -- A plea for sewers in West Rouge by Fred Le Blanc, a resident, was de-| bated by a group of Rouge residents who did not want sewers in their area, at a Pickering T 0 wns hip Council meeting recently. A. E. Bentley, representing Allan Wattman, spokesman for a group who has circulated a position and obtained 92.6 per cent of the names of residents on Rouge Hills drive, Taylor, road, and West Point crescent,| asked council to withdraw their streets from the sewer area. They felt they did not need the service. Mr. Le Blane walked out of the meeting, declaring that he did not have "'to go into back rooms to discuss an issue."' He left after the reeve suggested that the protests were not ad- dressed to the chair, but angrily to each other and therefore they should be argued outside the Council Chambers. | AREA HEALTH PROBLEM Mr. Le Blanc admitted that while the streets represented may not have health problems, the rest of the area did. He declared that affluent from septic tanks on these streets was leaking through a swamp to the river and to a bathing area in the lake, with the result that disease such as hepatitis was a threat. "The smell from this area) would knock you over," he said. When members of the group submitting the petition against sewers declared they were re- questing, not demanding, Coun- cil to consider their area, they stated they were not a "threat- ening" group. Said Mr. Le Blanc: "I am a threatening group!" He declared that if sewers did not go in he would have every health authority he could obtain out to inspect the area. Reeve J. S. Scott explained that these streets were neces- sary to the sewer system, and if they were not included there|township money, which the that the people who did not} would possibly be no sewer sys- tem at all.
