But it's occupied all right -- occupied in heating the entire South Plant and offices. It's the) powerhouse, where four boilers burn up to 256 tons of coal a day -- or, in especially cold periods, as much as 1,000 tons in three days. Three stories high, each boiler is fed by five mechanical feed- ers. The feeders get the coal from a 600-ton bunker which hangs from the ceiling. In turn, the bunkers are filled by bucket elevator and conveyors from an joutside pit. Two handlers spend 'an entire shift, making sure the bunker is filled evenly and tak- ing samples. These are later tested for moisture and heat value, All water used in making steam must be softened, and constant lab testing is needed to make sure that the process is consistent. Besides heat, the powerhouse produces compressed air to run production line tools. From day to day, three engin- eers take care of equipment, maintenance and overhaul. | Uptown at the West Plant, a second powerhouse provides north and west plants with steam heat and compressed air. WALKER President, General Motors of Canada, Limited It is expected that this year's production by the Canadian automotive industry will reach the highest level in six years. And GM sales records reflect the healthy state of the Canadian automobile market as a whole GM sales in January a record of 20,927 cars and trucks -- an increase of 6,581 over January 1961. Model year sales (October to January) also established an all-time high and employment by the company is now running at a near - record level, The marked upswing in total car sales across Canada, which began in the last half of 1961, will likely hit full stride during the next few months set that the industry this year will build at least 62,903 units. The Canadian automobile 'in- dustry's optimistic sales and production forecast for 1962 is based in the now obvious vigor of the general economy, steadily rising population. The present health of the economy good is re- flected in Canada's climbing in- # dustrial production, increased employment and hours of work, more favorable trade balance, easier money supply, increasing retail sales and relatively low inventories The outstanding market trend of 1961, now well established, was in the direction of North American-type passenger cars at the expense of the European cars. The decline in sales of Euro- pean cars became apparent incomes and expanding After four years of training, the apprentices emerge as elec- tricians, tool and die workers, millwrights, pipefitters, machin- ists or draftsmen.
