@ THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesdoy, February 27, 1962 TRAINS Ever wonder why trains have to travel through Osh- awa's streets? Each day, box- ears of car components and in some cases, whole cars, are IN STREET being shipped to seaports on their way overseas. Here is a trainload of engines destined for GM assembly plants in South America. GM Rags Big Item tagged after washing. The best quality rags are used as wipers and polishing cloths) for cars. The total number of parks the board looks after now is 27. This means more grass cut, more flowers and trees to plant and, believe it or not, more picking up after people who leave their debris behind. The 30-man staff has its hand full the year around to keep swings swinging and blooms blooming. "We want to make this city beautiful," said Superintendent Herbert Bathe, "but we need the co-operation of everybody in Oshawa." One of the main problems the parks men have on their hands is damage done to trees and flower beds. Sometimes newly planted trees seem to disappear into thin air over to' night, not to speak of broken off limbs. "It is heartbreaking insofar as planting trees is concerned," said Mr. Bathe. "Once we planted some at 11 o'clock in the morning and they were gone two hours later." "If people ask us: 'Why don't you plant more trees?' that is the reason." However, the men have done the best they can and will con- | tinue doing so, to maintain the} parks we have. That this is no| mean job may be illustrated by the fact that six grass mowers together cut a total of almost} 5,000 acres of grass Peuichon last summer. All lawns for| which the Parks Board is re-| sponsible are cut once a week, | Beautify. Your. "Last summer we had quite a job on our hands," said Mr. Bathe. 'Usually there is not too much growth during the hot months, but grass grew very well in the summer of 1961." Among other activities of the board during 1961 was the level- ing off of the west side of Lake- view Park, the planting of over 200 trees along boulevards and the maintenance of 14 skating 'rinks during the winter. GM Tours Rre Popular What is an automotive plant? It's a producer oi essential goods, an. emp'oyer of thou- sands, a vital force in the na- tional, provincial and municipal economies, And it's a tourist at- traction. In 1961, neariy 10,000 people came to Oshawa to see how cars and trucks are made by General Motors of Canada. They came from Pakistan, they came from the Soviet Union, from Hong Kong, The Netherlands, Sweden and the United States. They came singly. in family groups, and in organized groups. Engineering classes, and busi ness istration cl came from McGill, Queen's, the University of Toronte and the Royal Military College. Visitors were drawn by organ- izations such as FROS--Friend- ly Relations with Overseas Stu- dents. Foreman's vlubs from supplying companies were rep- resented. So were dealer per- sonnel, Late in the 1961 model year, invitations were placed in the glove compartment of every car that left the assembly line, in- viting the owner to come and see how his car was built. Tours through the passenger- car assembly plant are con- ducted daily, from mid-October to the middle of July. During the winter months, the tours are in the afternoon only at 1.30. Beginning in May, tours start at 10 a.m. and 1.30 p.m. |A. W. This is in spite of engineers' estimates that bat- teries generally are good: for three years. When it comes to Delco bat- teries -- the only kind used in GM cars -- Masson knows what he's :talking about. He and his assistants put fifty batteries a week through the wringer to make sure of their reliability and durability under the tough- est conditions In the test for cold engine starting power, Delco batteries spent 36 hours at a temperature of zero degrees. For the accelerated life test, batteries are kept for three months in a 110-degree water bath while being constantly charged and discharged, alter- nately, every six hours. To make certain that all batteries when sold are factory fresh, they undergo dry storage tests for up to two years. The active materials -- lead oxide plates which react with sulphuric acid -- are also sub- jected to chemical analysis as part of GM's testing program. In another test, terminal posts are twisted off, using a torque wrench to determine how well they are bonded to the battery casing. } At 'the end of it all, Masson gives this opinion of Delco bat- teries -- they're the best on the market in Canada. | PHONE 725-1764 A.
