This news is substantiated by industry records covering gas- oline sales for the first ten months of 1961. The trend ap- pears to continue, according to a statement released by the Bureau of Advertising of the American Newspaper Publish- ers Association. Charles T. Lipscomb, Jr., President of the Bureau, said, "The Shell people feel that their 1961. newspaper campaign has been an important factor in Shell's accelerating sales pic- ture." Shell's 1961 newspaper cam- paign was prepared by Ogilvy, Benson and Mather, the adver- tising agency for all Shell's product advertising. Starch readership reports, conducted while the 1961 campaign was running, gave early indications that the Shell campaign was being noticed and read. Twen- ty-one Shell advertisements were rated by Starch and Newspaper Ads Help Gas Selling jevery one of them beat the leight-year average for '"'noting"' lof gasoline advertisements. |Thirteen beat the alltime rec- ord. Readership ratings were equally impressive. Eight of the advertisements rated scored at least double the average for gasoline advertising. C. F, Martineau, Shell's ad- vertising manager, commenting on the Bureau's statement, said:- "Our 1961 campaign seems to have done a fine job in meeting the objectives we had for it. Our own consumer studies indicate that it has reg- istered our sales messages and the present competitive sales picture seems to confirm this finding." Mr. Martineau also confirm- ed that Shell would stick to its basic advertising message in 1962 -- '"'Today's Super Shell gasoline has nine ingredients to give your car top performance." Newspapers will continue to |play a major part in delivering this message. According to present indications, Shell will spend more money in news- paper advertising during 1962 than any other petroleum com- ipany. Mrs. Laroche, 52, is charged with having converted $10,790 in public funds to her own use while she was treasurer be- tween 1956 and 1960. Resuming testimony after a two - day adjournment, Ottawa contractor Laurier W. Noel told the court he moved his business from Eastview to Ottawa in 1960 because of the difficulty he had in obtaining building per- mits. He said the town had billed him early in that year for $6,961 for what it said wss the instal- lation of water and sewer serv- ices due at some of his build- ing sites. Mr. Noel told the court he did not believe he owed that much NET EARNINGS Trial's Focus On Permits but that he gave former Mayor Gordon Lavergne two post-dated cheques to cover the amount in the hope that he would be granted permits which he had requested earlier. He did not ob- tain the permits and stopped payment on the cheques.
