WHITBY SPORTS PARADE By GERRY BLAIR has accepted an offer of the! presidency of the Communist | friendship between the British "HERE'S MY STORY"--CHERRY Why were you fired as coach of the Whitby Mohawks? -- to which the deposed mentor Bob Cherry replied, "I am not too sure what the real rea- son is, -- I only know I am gravely disappointed and surprised at the move after spending five nights a week for two months working with these kids and trying to do my best. At one point last week I might have figured it was because of financial difficulties that led to my dismissal, figuring the club couldn't afford to pay my salary." To which we asked why he thought this, "Well" he replied, "when I asked Ivan to get Elmer Tran off the night shift last week, when we were about to play in Brampton, he flatly refused, because the club couldn't afford it. But that can't be it, -- as you can see for yourself, Tran is playing here tonight in Unionville, and he's still on nights." When I questioned Bob about why he insist- ed on Tran making the trip to Brampton he said, "I figured Elmer was, and still is, one of the leaders on this club, and it means a lot to have him in the line- up as you saw tonight." I wondered why Bob made a special trip to Unionville after being let out as coach. "I heard there was some unrest among a few of the players, and after their 6-3 loss at home against Unionville, I wondered if some of them were not giv- ing their best in protest against my being fired. But after their splendid performance tonight I'm happy to see that they showed no signs of bucking the club's decision. If there had've been I was going to try and persuade them to give 100 per cent co-operation to whoever takes over my job -- just as I'm proud to say, they did for me." WHO'S PULLING THE STRINGS ? Did you and Ivan get along well? "We had our disagreements," said Bob, "probably no more than other coaches and managers, although at times he tried to make decisions which I felt were mine. Per- haps he wanted both jobs. If a new coach is hired I'll know this theory was wrong." But after talking with Bob, we're still not clear on why he was fired. If what Davie told us about the executive forcing the issue is true, why didn't he stick by Cherry, or was he just trying to pass the buck. Apparently the executive deny putting Ivan up to firing Cherry. Aw come on fellows somebody has to assume the re- sponsibility. It's nice to get those hand shakes and pats on the back saying what great fellows you are, and what a marvellous thing it was to give Whitby Junior "A" hockey (which it is), but let's accept the knocks also, Surely you gentlemen are aware that operating a hockey club is certainly no bed of roses? TOWN AND COUNTRY ... Neither Norm Stew- art or Craig Watts were present for Tuesday's game in Unionville. Perhaps the rumors that some of the Toronto feflows were displeased with the decision to give Bob the heave-ho bear some truth...
