12 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thursday, December 7, 1961 ALD (14) OF BLACK H AWKS BEATS = "SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR i 'Everything From Soup To Nuts' CHICAGO BLACK HAWKS, just about the time the "experts" were getting ready to wash out the Stan- ley Cup holders as mere also-rans for the 1961-62 hon- ers, snapped to life last night in New York and handed the Rangers an 8-3 licking, with "Ab" McDonald scoring three goals for the Hawks. The win keeps the Chi- hawks a notch ahead of Detroit so now, the Red Wings have to start flying if they hope to finish in the top four and catch a Stanley Cup playoff berth. Leafs are in Montreal tonight and Rangers visit Detroit while the Black Hawks play in Boston. Toronto Leafs have called up ex-Boston Bruin netminder Don Simmons, to do their goal-keeping chores tonight in Montreal. Mean- while, word comes out of Montreal that their ace de- fenceman, Tom Johnson, who suffered an eye injury a week ago in Toronto when struck by teammate Lou Fontinato's stick, will be able to get back into action in about two weeks. BOXING NEWS is interesting these days, even if you don't feel like taking everything you read too seriously. Henry Cooper's defeat by Zora Folley on Tuesday night may have cost him a chance for a title fight with heavyweight Floyd Patterson. Maybe Cooper wasn't so stupid? Seems that the Cooper-Patterson fight was all teed up, but the upset by Folley will no doubt change things drastically. Archie Moore, who seldom goes 48 hours without being quoted, tells it now that he refused to fight Cleroux on Tuesday night in Montreal, when fight promoters "started to barter" -- they and we presume "they" is promoter Eddie Quinn, wanted to trim Moore's $50,000 guarantee when the advance sale made it obvious that the event was to bea financial flop. Meanwhile, Sugar Ray Robinson fights Canadian Wilf Greaves in a return bout, tomorrow night in Pittsburgh. And for the icing -- Toronto promoter Frank Tunney is now offering Bob Cleroux another re- turn bout with George Chuvalo -- in Toronto, .Oh hum -- if the natives buy this one -- they'll buy anything!
