(AP)---A powerful U.S. satellite-tracking radar has picked up evidence that 350,000,000 tiny copper fila- ments sent aloft Oct. 21 in an air force communications test are still orbiting in a package-- instead of a cloud. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Lincoln Labor- atory said it is carrying out cal- culations and experiments as to why the copper hairs seemingly have not been released. The purpose of the experi- ment was to spread a band of the tiny needles in an orbit 2,100 miles above the earth. The fine wires were to have formed a thick cloud about five miles wide and 25 miles deep--with the wires generally a quarter- mile apart.
