Bower's assiduous goaltending permitted his mates to skate off with a 1-0 lead at the first intermission. Seated next to us in the Garden's press box was a sagacious writer Serrell Hillman, from Time Maga-_ zine who was on hand to study Jacque Plante, hoping to acquire further material for an article he was do- ing about the roving Canadien's netminder. Mr. Hill- man commented late in the second period: "Wouldn't you know on the night I finally get the opportunity to see Plante in action, that other fellow -- what's his name -- oh yes, Johnny Bower, steals the lime- light. I should be doing an article on him." Mr, Hill- man, admittedly so, was a trifle nescient about the game of hockey, and had never heard of Johnny Bower, before Wednesday's game. Apparently he left for the U.S. six years ago,and just returned to our side of the border a couple months back. BOWER TALKS IT UP Bower a dedicated National leaguer, puts heart and soul into his efforts for the entire 60 minutes, and often criticizes his fellow Leaf members if the going gets rough. Off the ice, Johnny is a pleasant, unassuming individual. A perfect example of his con- structive criticism came late in the third period with his club clinging to their slim one-goal margin. Marcel Bonin was streaking down the left boards in Leaf territory with Bobby Baun defending him. Bower was heard to yelly "Bobby, Bobby, heads up", Baun took a lacksadaisical approach to Bonin cruising to- wards the Leaf goal, and as a result Bonin romped around Baun to get a clear drive at Bower. Johnny grabbed the puck and held it for a face-off. Moments son. Ways and Means Commit-|to the Ajax Hospital and tee, D. Anderson, T. Krawec,| wished a speedy recovery.
