Business, Pleasure Balanced By E. A. Lovell H&S Association During the year 1960-61 E. A. Lovell Home and School Asso- ciation presented interesting and informative programs. In September we had "Get Acqu- ainted'" night." A skit 'The proper and improper way of interviewing a teacher'? was put on by three members of Coun- cil, Mr. Rebert Broadbent, our principal, introduced the teach- ers and the parents visited the classrooms. In October, Miss Carol Greene, this years' win- ner of the. Red Feather Public Speaking Contest (senior grades) presented her speech at the meeting. A panel discussed the subject "Discipline in the Home and School'. This panel con- sisted of Mrs. R. Bell, modera- tor, Mrs. S. Sharples, Rev. C. D. Cross, Mr. Barney Lewis and Mr. John Franconi, In November .we held our an- nual card party and our Open House. December a Christmas program was presented by Kind- ergarten Grades I, Hi and VIII pupils. January, we had our 40th Birthday with past presidents and. teachers. Mr. Douglas Walkington, preident of H and S and parent-teacher Federation, was guest speaker. Miss Rita Robinson was made a life mem- ber of our Association. In Feb- ruary, a lectern was presented to Miss Aileen Found by our Association, this to remain in the school in her honor. A film "Fears in Children" was shown followed by a panel discussion with Mrs. R. Bell as moderator and Miss Dorothy Redpath, Dr. Robert Guselle, Mr. Barnard Lewis, Miss Simpson participat- ing. W. Courtice H&S! Five Years Old The association is five years eld. The school when first built was only two rooms but, recent- ly, two more have been added. In the school year 1960-1961 we donated sufficient money to the school so that a library could be started. To raise this money we held two bake sales at the Eastway Bowling Lanes. We also provided a Christmas Party for the children and treats were In March, Rev. S. C. H. Atkin- son gave a talk on the Easter theme. In April, Mr: Terence Kelly gave a talk on the law in relation to children and par- ents. Our*money making pro- ject was our annual card party, which was the most successful to date. Our annual carnival was held at the arena in Febru- ary and was enjoyed by child- ren and parents. A tea was held in the fall for the mothers' of Grade ¥. Our two Grade VIII's were sent te Toronto for a day. A gift of books for the school li- brary in honor of Miss Rita Robinson. A treat was pro- vided for the children on Field Day. The annual gift to the Staff of a Teachers Magazine was presented. representatives to the Peter- borough Conference, and one delegate and three r nta- tives te the convention ron- to. A gift of money was sent to "Pake a Refugee Child to Din- ner". We had the confectionery concession of the annual field day, which proved very sucess- ful. Supports Missions The Evening Branch of ihe Woman's Auxiliary of Christ Memorial Church was organiz- ed in September 1956 by Mrs. Donald Souch. From an attend- ance of eight at the first meet- ing. membership has grown to ie ob The branch funds are used to help maintain missions in Can- ada and abroad and to help with the needs of its parish. Once a month members meet with the afternoon branch for a study book meeting. Some of ihe group help in the Tuck Shop at Hillsdale Manor regularly, and also assist in serving coffee at the Red Cross Bleed Donor's Clinic. Along with other groups of the church a bdzaar is held near Christmas and again in May. An evening of bridge is held in October. These are the main projects for raising money throughout the season. A testimonial dinner was held in 1954 for Mr. Harold Pascoe in recognition of 25 years of teach- ing in Westmount. Many for mer teachers and friends in the community attended and Mr. Pascoe was presented with a gold watch. Last year's programs were educational with goed speak- ers, films and enjoyable musk cal entertainment. Kindergarten and Grade 2 Tea is. held to acquaint parénis and teachers. Open House wag held on Nov. ' 17, 1960, before our regular meeting. The kindergarten class was given candy at Christmas; & Christmas tree was put up im their room also. . A Christmas tree was put if the hall for the rest of the children. A retord playér was presented to the school as @ Christmas gift. A successful bazaar was held on Nov. 26, 196@. | A room prize is given to the teacher with the most parents present at a Home and School meeting. A birthday Pot Luck supper was held in Mareh. At field day, we sold home- made candy, chips, chocolate bars, pop. A graduation party was held for Grade 8% students. We only have kindergarten +@ Grade 6 now. The former Grade 6 students are to be given schoo] pins at our November meeting.
