SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1961 . ONTARIO TODAY THE AMAZING NEW CELLULOSE FILLER SUNSHINE LIVING ORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- Nineteen families who once called Canada home are finding a new way of life in this land of year-round sunshine. The Canadians are part of a population of 7000 persons who live in this attractive, pre-planned sub-tropical city-built by the Mackle Company for General Development Corporation. Port Charlotte, with an area of 92,900 acres, midway between Fort Myers and Sarasota on Florida's West Coast, lies on beautiful Charlotte Harbor between the Peace and Myakka Rivers. Here, the former Canadians ar enjoying not "retirement" but "re- newment,"' a word coined by Gen- eral Development in embarking on a campaign to convince the people of the United States and Canada that life begins anew with retire- ment in the cities the huge Florida company is building on both coasts of the Sunshine State. And how do Canadians take to their new life in the sun? "Believe me, it's just great," enthuses James B. Macon who formerly operated an auto parts concern in Windsor. *I love to fish, and even though the fishing is fine in Canada you can only get out in the summer. Here it's summer all year 'round." Jim and Thelma Macon live in an attractive two-bedroom bungalow on one of Port Charlotte's many waterways which lead into Char- lotte Harbor and the Gulf of Mexico. Tied up at dock is an 18- foot jet-motor boat in which the Macons spend many an hour an- gling for tarpon, mackerel, red- fish and snapper which aboud in the Southwest Florida waters. HE Macons originally had plan- ned to spend their retirement years in Canada, living in a house which they built on the shores of Lake St. Clair. Then, in 1955, Mr. Macon was stricken with a heart attack, and the doctor recommend- ed a milder climate. A second at- tack in 1959 brought the Macons to Florida. They spent several vacations "shopping around," and decided they wanted to live on the Florida West Coast south of St. Petersburg. They chose Port Charlotte, Mr. Macon says, "because it offers more facilities than any development we looked at in Florida. Here we were able to buy a house for a low down payment and low monthly payments, with all facilities, such as gas, electricity and paved streets already in." Mr. Macon says both he and his wife have enjoyed better health since coming to Florida. "I do more physical work than I used to," he added, "but I take it in easy stages. We work a little and play a little and there isn't enough time in the day for every- thing we want to do." In addition to the fishing, which they both enjoy, the Macons are kept busy with a number of other activities. Thelma has her house- work and Jim keeps the lawn and garden shipshape. Last year both were enrolled in Port Charlotte U, the unique adult education school sponsored and financed by Gen- eral Development for residents of Port Charlotte. Jim took courses in boating and fishing.and Thelma was enrolled in a class in pine needle craft. As the outcome of surveys and personal inspection, the Mackle brothers, who built the community, founded Port Charlotte U on the theory that many older residents wished to continue the formal edu- cation may had failed to complete.
