NEw university buildings are going up in all parts of Ontario. The face of our univer-' sities is changing rapidly from that of Gothic. and Victorian architecture to the ultra-modern. To accommodate in the next few years the tens of thousands of students now in high schools, universities are having their biggest building boom and: new universities are under construction in northern and northwestern sec- tions of the province. The newest of Ontario's universities began its second year of teaching in a brand new: building this fall in northeastern suburban Toronto. York University's new $2,000,000 academic building is now being used by the 215 students enrolled at this liberal arts college, at Bayview and Lawrence Avenues, on an estate overlooking the picturesque Don River Valley. Next year a residential building is planned by York University on this site to take care of some 800 students. As an example of university planning, York will start a new campus on a 500-acre site in northwestern suburban Toronto in 1967. The new site will make possible enrollment of 10,000 students. A night college is also planned to start next September in a central part of Toronto to take care of students unable to go to university in the daytime. At Port Arthur the Lakehead College of Arts, Science and Technology has built two small additions to its facilities at a cost of. $200,000. The new buildings are now in use and the college is busy with plans for a men's residence to be built within the next year. At Sudbury Laurentian University is shap-: ing up to start operations in the not too dis- tant future.
