8 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesday, October 24, 1961 35 YEARS AGO THIS MONTH Branch 43 Charter Signed Back In October 23, 1926 -- The official act which broughtGraves, a meeting to form the | vincial command was present to the Oshawa Branch 43, of the Canadian Legion into being, the signing of its charter by the Dominion President and Secre- tary, took place on Oct. 23, 1926, just 35 years ago this month The organization of the branch however, took place at a meet- ing held on August 19, 1926. Prior to that time, thece had been organizations of veterans in Oshawa. The Great War Veterans As- sociation was organized near the end of the First World War. and for a few years carried on very: successfully, and had an exceptionally fine and active ladies' auxiliary. For various reasons however, the GWVA Passed out of existence so far as the men were concerned, but the ladies of the auxiliary kept their organization intact, and carried on their activities un- broken. RECALL HISTORY Just prior to the formation of the Canadian Legion in 1925 an Ex-Servicemen's Social Club was formed, providing the nu- cleus from which the Canadian Legion was born The Canadian Legion as a na- tional organization was fcrmed in 1925, when Field Marshal Earl Haig visited Canada and brought about the amalgamation of over 20 different veteran groups under the name of the Canadian Legion. The organiza- tion of branches all over the country at once proceeded, and in the early summer of 1926 steps were taken to form a | branch in Oshawa. After sev: | eral preliminary meetings of an | organization committee under | the chairmanship of Johnny A./ Oshawa branch was held on August 19, 1926 in a hall on Simcoe Street North. EAST OSHAWA Did You Know That The ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION Contributes Thousands of Doliars on Welfare Work? -- READ THESE FACTS -- Canadian Legion Week is designed to inform all ex-service personnel, who are not members of the Canadian Legion and the public in general-what the Legion stands for. (1) The Canadian Legion contributes $20,000 plus several hundreds of dollars by each branch every year for deve- lopment of young athletes. {2) Legion scholarship and bursaries which exceed $65,000 each year. (3) Canadian Legion spent $2 million dollars in Canada, providing low rental dwellings for older veterans. {4) More than 20 items of veteran fegislation requested by the Legion have been passed in the !ast two years. (5) Legion Service Bureau enabled individual Cancdians to obtein $213,000 in pension and allowances. (6) Legion Branch are actively engaged in Community work in some 2,200 centres. (7) Over 16,000 veterans and dependents have been assisted by the Legion Service Bureau since 1946. These are a few of the items which the Legion has been assisting the veterans. You undoubtedly are still interested in helping former com- rades who, because of war disabilities, didn't fare as well as you. Maybe you've often wondered what happened to the widow or dependents of some friend who didn't come back. Perhaps you feel impelled to help the youth of your communi- ty to promote better citizenship. You can do these things, and many more, in the Canadian Legion.
