McINTYRE HOOD Special to The Oshawa Times LONDON -- The British way of life is changing under th impact of prosperity and of th: security offered by the welfar state. That is the conclusior which has been reached by Dr Ferdynand Zweig, a Polish born social research expert, who has made a study of the British scene. His findings have been published in a book "The Worker in an Affluent Society", and they outline the changes which have taken place in the way of life of the British work- ing class population. The chief change to be noted is in the evaluation of what are Nights out with "the boys", stag beer: parties, and keen interest in trade union gatherings are among the things which seem to have gone from the average working man's life. MORE HOME LIFE In their place has come a much stronger emphasis on home life, home comforts and the spending of much more time with the family. The worker spends much more time in his home. He is now more interested in doing a bit of dec- orating that in 'going on the beer." One Zweig: "In my days a man pushing a pram would have been a laughing stock. Now you see a great many men pushing their prams proudly. He also washes the children, gives them baths, older man told Dr. school records, goes to school on parents' day, tries to fix them up with a good job or an apprenticeship." Dr. Zweig was impressed at finding a new ambition for the children to be given the very best possible advantages. The old idea that "what was good for my father and me should be good enough for the chil- dren" has gone. There is now a new pride in seeing children go far ahead of what their par- ents had done. happiness, reads them stories, follows their) the) Britain FRONT DOOR What Dr. Zweig describes as moving to the front door' is me of the deeper changes in che thinking and way of life of British workers. He talked o one working man who has lived for two years in his new modern home. This man has said that in the previous house the front door was never meant .o be used. There was a settee across it. Now t are dif- ferent, and the family used the front door for the purpose for which it was intended. This to Dr. Zweig indicates a. deep social revolution that has swept through the minds of the British working classes. He writes: "Family life now stands in the working man's mind for enjoyment and ree laxation. As he sits by his fireside: and watches TV he feels free and happy. The wife doesn't snap at him as she used to do;; the children are no longer seen crawling and messing about on the floor, shouting and screaming. The foul air, the vermin, the out- side, smelling lavatory, the broken chairs have been re- moved as if by magic. Instead, there is a_ nicely-furnished house of his own, or a council house which is a near equival- ent to his own property." MORE FEMININITY The book gives an interesting analysis of the worker of to- day. It says: 'He marries earlier. He takes his wife or sweetheart rout more frequently; he is more of a home-bird. The women around him imbue him with feminine values. He accepts his wife as his companion on more or less equal terms, especially when she goes out to work and earns her own living." These are the indications of the social revolution which Dr. Zweig has revealed in hig tell- ing book.
