i ; 22 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Typreday, Getober 19) 1961 Magistrate R. B. Dnieper con- tified his declared war on drinking drivers in Whitby police court on Tuesday and sent four drivers to jail for a total of 135 days. His standard sentence for drunk driving was 30 days and for impaired driving 15 days. His Worship noted that on the day's docket of 19 cases, 11 were intoxicated driving or allied charges. "This is going to be stopped in this county. I don't care whether the accused is unem- ployed or a big executive, it is going to stop," he said. "I do not want people or their chil- dren subject to the mercies of drunken drivers. "I said before that sentences are going up," said His Worship as he handed down the first of the series of 30-day sentences, "but possibly people did not be- lieve me." IN ACCIDENT James. Bud Davis, 18, of 143 Agnes street, Oshawa, was jail- ed for 30 days when he pleaded guilty to a charge of having the care and control of a motor ve- hicle while intoxicated on Sept. PC David Kernohan, of the Whitby Detachment of the OPP, said that he found that Davis' car had been proceeding along a gravel road, north of Port Perry, after being pursued by Port Perry Police, and had col- lided with the rear of a parked vehicle, causing about $500 dam- age to the tw cars. Davis' car, he said, had rolled on its side and Davis, who ap- (peared in court on crutches, was injured. Tadeus Kowalski, RR 1, Whit- by, was jailed 15 days when convicted of impaired driving. He had been charged with driv- ing while intoxicated on Oct. 8 but His Worship reduced the charge. PC D. FOUND NO SHOCK Dr. K. C. Hobbs, of Whitby, told the court that he treated| the accused at the Ajax Hospi- tal for a cut on the eye-lid and a cut on the lip. He said there were no symptoms of shock. He told the court that in his opin- ion, Pett was intoxicated. PC David Fleming, of Pick- ering Township Police Depart- ment, said that he had investi- gated a head-on collision on the westbound lane of Highway 2 at 2 a.m. and found that a pick-up truck, travelling west, had been struck. A motion, proposed by Reeve Sherman Scott of Pickering Township, that the County of Ontario withdraw from the Tii- County Planning area, which ,|was set up in 1960, by the coun- ties of York, Peel and Ontario, was unanimously passed by the council. he found the truck parked, ap- parently out of gasoline. Guy Dunlop was asleep behind the wheel and Gordon Dunlop asleep in the passenger seat. He said Gordon was intoxi- cated and Guy in no condition to drive. A breathalizer test pare Gordon had a count of Guy Dunlop told the court that his brother had done all the driving. He maintained that they had consumed four or five glasses of beer in Port Hope. Then, he said, after their truck ran out of gasoline, they decided to spend the night on the highway and the two of them drank a bottle of whisky they had brought with them. "The County of Peel has already withdrawn from the area," said Reeve Scott in speaking to the motion, the County of Ontario has had little or no advantage in the planning area. , "The idea behind the Tri- County Planning Area was that we could all have regional plan- ning,"' he said, "but this is not possible because the three coun- ties have nothing much in com- moa, oe "The overall picture of Tri- County Planning was not to the benefit of Ontario County," said Reeve Cyril Morley of Pickering village, in concurring with Mr. Scott's remarks. "The consensus of opinion of council's representatives on the tri - county planning board is that we should withdraw," said TDeputy-reeve Pat Sheehan of Ajax, a representative on the! board, TAME REBEL MEAFORD, Ont.
