Campbell SPORTS EDITOR FART PERE RL I SRNRNRIRIRRTRERRRSIERENY FEF r EF IFYEYY $y 'Everything From Soup To Nuts' THEY PRIED the lid off the 1961-62 National Hockey League season last night (and also in the Am- erican Hockey League) and while there's no reason at this early date to expect the New York Rangers to gallop through this season's campaign to a first or second-place finish, we suspect that the presence of playing-coach Doug Harvey is certainly going to give the Blues more zip than they've shown in recent terms. He got the goal that broke the 1-1 deadlock last night in Boston and Rangers went on to win the opening game 6-2. and we know for sure that Doug Harvey isn't going to score tie-breaking goals every time his team is need- ing one, but certainly he'll be an inspiration to his charges, for this same NHL All-Star defenseman for numerous years can also score goals, stick-handle and lead attacks. He used to do it frequently with the Can- adiens and in recent years, they didn't need much help "yp front", These same two teams go right back at it tonight in Gotham and the Bruins will be in danger of a very bad start if they drop this one as well. SPORT FANS of the track-and-field variety, around Whitby, Ajax, Oshawa, etc, will be interested to know that Tom Tushingham, former Ontario schoolboy champ=- fon, started his U.S. College career in impressive fashion when he led the Seton Hall University freshman cross- country team to an opening meet victory over the Ford- ham University Frosh, a- week ago. Tushingham, a graduate of Whitby, finished first, in the fine time of 17:32, two seconds ahead of a teammate, Joe Kroh. Johnny Gibson, a former U.S. Olympic runner, is the coach of the South Orange, N.J. Seton Hall team and thinks Tushingham has great promise. He turned in a 49.4 in the 440-yards and a 1:56.4 in the half-mile, in Whitby last year and won the Ontario 440 title and also the Canadian age-class title in the same event. Tom will have six more meets and three champion- ghip meets before the indoor season rolls around, BRIGHT BITS -- Jim Denholm, president of the Oshawa and District Soccer Association, reports the finding of a man's ring, at Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium and it is believed to belong to some player using the dressing room.
