Journalist Education Fellowships TORONTO (CP) -- Dr. Claude| § Bissell, president of the Univer- sity of Toronto, Tuesday an- nounced foundation of the Sout- ham Newspapers fellowships for journalists to further education for journalism in Canada. The Southam Company, which publishes daily newspapers in eight Canadian cities and has broadcasting and magazine .in- terests, is establishing three an- nual one-year fellowships at the university. Each pays the win- ner the equivalent of salary up to $7,500 plus cost of moving families to Toronto and univer- sity fees. The first fellowships will be for study in the university year 1962-63. The fellows will be working newspaper, magazine, radio and television writers-- men or women--with at least five years' experience. They must agree to return to their present employers for at least a year after their study. | Application forms, to be re-| turned by March 1, 1962, ars) obtainable from the office of Dr. Bissell. "The objective of the fellow-| ships is to elevate the standards of journalism in Canada by furthering the education of qual- ified persons," says a university leaflet. *. . . Although no for- mal credits will be given, it is felt that fellows will probably do intensive study of some of the basic disciplines--history, eco-| nomics, political science, litera-| ture or philosophy, and attend | the lectures and write the ex-| aminations on at least one course." { Fellows will be chosen from among the applicants by a panel of university and journalism personalities. Those under 40 years of age will be favored. Planners Needed | For People Blast TORONTO (CP)--School busi- | ness officials were told Tuesday | the education systems of North) America must produce sufficient qualified regional and town plan- | ners to meet the unprecedented | population explosion of the con-| tinent. Frederick G. Gardiner, chair- man of Metropolitan. Toronto, | told the 47th annual convention of the International Association| of School Business Officials there are not enough trained planners to go around to face the swift transition from rural to urban ways of life. What are needed, Mr. Gardi- ner said, are professional plan- ners with a 'knowledge of eco-| nomics, sociology and engineer- | ing. The planner would have to be enough of an idealist to| know what his region should | have and enough of a philoso: | pher to refuse to become frus- treated i his plans are shelved.
