mrt rT ------------ - Consumer Buying More In States NEW YORK (AP) -- The con- sumer is opening up his wallet and doing more buying. That became evident this weck in the appliance, furniture and automobile industries. Another bright note was an improvement in the unemploy- ment situation. But the second big strike within a month in the automo- bile industry was a disturbing factor. On the heels of settle- ment of a walkout against Gen- eral Motors Corp., the United Automobile Workers union called out 120,000 Ford Motor Co. workers and shut down that company's production. Commerce Secretary Luther Hodges reported retail sales are "beginning to perk up." INSTALLMENT DEBT UP An indication of increased buying was the fact that con- sumers increased their install- ment debt by $26,000,000 in Aug- ust after a $74,000,000 reduction in July. The appliance industry, hard- pressed lately, reported a sharp increase in sales in September. Borg Warner's Norge divi- sion's factory sales were 59 per|of the carmakers to increase| cent above September 1960. General Electric's Hotpoint di- vision said its late September sales were the highest in three years, A pickup in buying was noted by the furniture industry. Sales|clined by 457,000 in September] | for many dealers have moved ahead of the 1960 level for the first time this year. Some ma- jor producers have increased prices from two to five per cent and most retailers are passing the increases along to custom- ers. Automakers also found a liv- cly demand as they introduced their 1962 models. Ford and the UAW agreed on national economic terms--much the same as in the new General Motors contract -- but failure to resolve all issues brought a strike at the company's 85 plants on Tuesday. WORK HARD Union and management re- presentatives worked doggedly to settle national non - econo- mic issues and local grievances in an effort to keep the strike from stringing out for two weeks as did the General Motors work stoppage. The Ford strike gouged into production, cutting output this |week to an estimated 106,000 {passenger cars from 122593 last week and 140,984 a year ago. | The auto industry's labor {troubles have resulted in failure {their Steel orders for October {and November.
