HAS HAD 100 SPILLS Young Canada Horsewoman First Westerner On Team By JACK SULLIVAN Canadian Press Sports Editor There's an old saying in the equestrian set to the effect that if you've been thrown off a horse 100 times, you're a good rider. Gail Ross isn't convinced she's a top horsewoman, but she qualifies as one. This good-looking, brown-eyed Edmonton girl has lost count of the times she has been uncere- moniously dumped, "but it is certainly more than 100," she said shortly after her selection as a member of Canada's in- ternational jumping team on the winter circuit. "I come off and don't think anything about it," the 19-year- old added. "I've never been seriously hurt, but this won't go on forever. One of these days I'll get it, but I'm not really worried." The five-foot-seven rider is the first person from Western Canada to be chosen for Can- ada's team. She'll show her stuff in the Pennsylvania na- tional championships at Harris- burg Oct. 14-21 and the Wash- ington International at Wash- ington Oct. 25-28. NO BUTTERFLIES One thing that troubles her is that she can't seem to get an edge on in competition. "I don't get butterflies in my stomach and that's the trouble with me," she said in Toronto where she is training with the team. "You've got to get an edge on in any kind of competi- tion and I can recall only once, a few years ago, when I really had butterflies. And I won. ; "You can't do the job with- 58 out a bit of an edge." : She was in California this summer with her father, an Edmonton 1um b e r merchant, when she received a letter ask- ing if she would like to try for Canada's team. That started a 2,700-mile automobile ride she isn't likely to forget in a long | time. She bundled two of her horses --Wings of Gold and Pinnacle-- on a two-horse trailer and started out. She made it in five days. A cousin accompanied her and each night they stopped near a stockyard to let the herses relax. STARTED AT SIX "If anybody was around, we asked if we could turn the horses loose. If there was no one there, we'd just put them in a corral and let them run zround. It didn't matter to them who they were standing beside --a hog, cow or anything--they just wanted to get out of the | trailer." She has been riding horses nce she was six years old. ls NEW WOODBINE ENTRIES Copyright, 1961 by McMurray Publishing Co. (Daily Racing Form) WEDNESDAY, OCT. 4, 191. First Race 6 furlongs.
