ancouver H.S. Girl Heads For Golf Career By H. L. JONES VANCOUVER (CP) -- Golf isn't the only thing in the young life of high school student Gayle Hitchens but right now it's just about the most important. "In our house we just live golf," said the blue-eyed blonde 17 - year - old who this year won the Canadian junior title. "Mother doesn't play but she lives the game with Dad and me just the same." Like her father, Gayle says she 'practically grew up on a golf course." The Hitchens lived beside Regina's Gyro Golf Club and Bob Hitchens became the pro there before moving to the coast where he now is assistant pro at North Vancouver's Capil- ano golf club. ANOTHER MARLENE? Gayle came to know golf in Regina where she was born. The family moved to the coast when she was 13 after spending two years in Vernon, B.C. Now the experts say that with her fa- ther's teaching and her own natural ability, Gayle seems well on the way to becoming one of Canada's golfing greats like Marlene Stewart Streit of Thornhill, Ont. This year Gayle, besides win- ning the Canadian junior title, became the youngest girl ever to reach the finals of the Cana- dian women's open golf cham- pionship -- being just a few months younger than Mrs. Streit Gayle smiled: really. some day, but I don't think I'll ever be good enough. You've got t be awfully good to make ao success as a professional." ers shyly that her putting had been off early in the match. But she made a determined bid later because "I felt I just had to give her a battle." PRAISE FROM RIVAL In the semi - finals Gayle's steady game knocked out one of the name players, Miss Mar- jorie Burns, a 35-year-old sea- soned tourney veteran from Greensboro, N.C., who holds the eastern U.S. title and is ranked 10th in the United States. Said Miss Burns after the match: "You're not going to for- get the name of Hitchens in golf. She's a great little player and cool as a cucumber when the pressure is on." Gayle, a better-than-average i student--she's in grade XII at North Vancouver High School-- has a trim, 112-pound figure and likes parties and dances. has no steady boy friend though --'"there's plenty of time for |that."" All sports attract her-- swimming, skating and basket- ball--but golf is her first love. Did she have any ideas about turning professional? "I'd have to improve an awful lot before I could even turn pro." Told she was being modest, "No I'm not I'd love to turn pro who previously held that honor. In the 36-hole open final over Point Grey's 6,500-yard, tree- lined course she put up a great battle, finally losing out 2-up to FIGHTS LAST NIGHT 24-year-old defending champion Judy Darling of Montreal. At one point Gayle was six down to her more experienced op- ponent but won back five holes close-to-the-pin chip shots that brought gasps and chers from By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Miami Beach, Fla. As in the two previous games, this one proved another sensa- tional defensive battle with Earle of Houdaille coming up with a four-hitter and backed by fine support from his mates, managed to keep Crawford's entirely off the score-sheet. Doug Keeler gave up five hits and only one of them mattered, a home-run blow by Junior Milne, to open the second in- ning. Keeler struck out 13 bat- ters in the hard-fought 9-inning tussle. Woods, Jones, Kuney, Milne and Elliott had the five safe hits for the winners. Crawford's came close in the first inning when Cornish sin- gled and Yuill drew a walk, ned Roberts and Hodgson to wipe out the threat. Earle, with nine strikeouts, earned his shutout. Cornish, Roberts, McAvoy and Lean had the four hits for Crawford's but they couldn't get a semblance of a rally going after the first inning. : Fourth game in this title round is scheduled for Tuesday evening, six o'clock, at pd view Park.
