Two players from this area, Jack Cole and Ed Westfall, both grad- uates of the Oshawa Minor Hockey Association, will be among the 30 aspirants trying to catch a berth with the Bruins. Even if Cole and Westfall had a chance of making the jump it appears likely that they will be optioned out for the coming year to the Kingston Frontenacs of the Eastern Professional Hockey League, the number one club in the Bruin farm system. Osh- awa and Whitby fans will be solidly behind Ed and Jack as they attempt to further their hockey careers. The reason why they would not stay with the Bruins is because should they fail to maintain the terrific pace set in the big time, Bruins Manager Lynn Pat- rick couldn't farm them out in their rookie year. At this rate, it might hinder their progress, not being able to receive seasoning in the minors until the fol- lowing year. To our knowledge it has been sometime since a hockey youth from this vicinity has had a shot at National Hockey League competition. The most recent in our memory is the time New. York Rangers drafted Whitby's pride and joy, Ross Lowe for $15,000, just prior to his most unfortunate and untimely death. The Rangers were counting heavily on Ross filling in the missing link at centre. Whitby and Oshawa fans will have an opporun- ity of seeing both Ed Westfall and Jack Cole on Sep- tember 27, (Wednesday) when the Rochester Ameri- cans and the Kingston Frontenacs stage an extra- special hockey attraction at the Whitby Community arena. Along with cole and Westfall will be former Whitby Dunlop players, Bobby Attersley, Harry Sin- den and Alf. Treen. A bit of spice is being thrown in when Ed Chadwick, former Toronto Maple Leaf net minder will be opposing his mates from last year in Rochester. Chadwick appears to be the number- one goaltender for the Kingston Frontenacs this season. He became Boston property last season when he was traded to the Bruins for Don Simmons. Chadwick was at that time with the Americans, a Leal-sponsor- ed club, and was allowed to finish out the season in Rochester. Three goalies are jockeying for the job in Boston this year--Don Head, the fiery puckstopper at one time paying regular visits to the Whitby arena as a Windsor Bulldog, and last season with the West- ern Hockey league champion Portland Buckaroos; Bruce Gamble, who replaced Simmons shortly after the beginning of the 1960-61 NHL schedule, and Chad- wick. Of the three, Head appears to have the out- side chance of obtaining the netminding position with Boston. That would leave Gamble and Chadwick to be dispersed to Portland and Kingston. The Front- enacs have asked for Chadwick should he not catch on with the Bruins TOWN AND COUNTRY ... Another familiar face to Oshawa and Whitby fans will be former Oshawa General, Dick Gamble now a member of the Roch- ester Americans LONG JOHN Henderson is also expected to be trying again for the netminding job at Kingston, and should see some action on Sept. 27 here in Whitby . . . Boston Bruins concluded their special one week hockey camp at Niagara Falls for their top minor prospects on Friday with 38 players on hand, including five from Oshawa. The line of Terry Peters, Stan "Butch" Dowe, and Roddy Mac- Donald looked very good the 17th time in 18 clashes dat- ing back to 1922. The Americans swept Friday's foursome matches and won seven of Saturday's eight sin- gles matches for an 11-1 tri- umph, matching the record The U.S. won by the same margin in 1928 and by 90 in 1936. Ross got his first of four for the Wings at the 15.30 mark and the locals had thé fiead for the second time in the game However, the long Branch team bounced right back and tied the score at two-all as Keegan again scored on a pass from Webb. The homesiers took the lead for the first and only time in the game at the 18.00 mark as {Trory scored on a solo effort | while his team was a man short. Moore got that one back for the Wings just 75 seconds later with Webb still in the sin bin The score was all tied up at the end of the first 20 minutes. START ROLLING In the second period the Wings really started to roll.
