After all, he had just picked up the biggest purse, $20,000, of his long fight career. Johnson, recognized as king of the 175-pounders by the Na- tional Boxing Association when it stripped Archie Moore of the title for inactivity, took charge of the fight in the late rounds. He was given the decision by judge Norman Kunde and ref- eree James Rondeau, who both saw it 147-145 in points. Judge Sam Heller voted for Cotton 148- 144, It was Johnson's fourth fight in seven months and attracted only 4,004 spectators. The event was held outdoors at Sick's Sta- dium. Johnson, who has been fight- ing 18 years, weighed 173 pounds to Cotton's 170. Cotton is ranked fourth in the NBA among light- heavyweight challengers: There were no knockdowns. Johnson's right brought an egg- sized lump over Cotton's left eye in the eighth round and a cut in the lid of his right eye during the ninth. By the time the 13th came round, Cotton's left eye was closed but his left jab kept him out of real danger.
