9 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesday, August 29, 1961 , Applications for enrolment are still deluging O'Neill Collegiate and Vocational Institute. At school closing last spring, principal G. L. Roberts was planning for a fall enrolment of{ plained. At Donovan, crowding 1,400. By August, he had to re- vise this figure to 1,550. Now he is expecting around 1,600. Central Collegiate and Dr. J. F. Donevan Collegiate are also expecting large enrolments. A. D. Woods, principal of Dono- van, said he expects about 780 ~-- the maximum for the school is 800. An enrolment of 760 is expected at Central, as ecom- pared to 699 last September. Even with the three shifts planned at OCVI, classes will still be large, with many having 40 students, Mr. ~Roberts said. By current standards, the de- sired number is 30-35, Le ex- will be most severe in Grade 10 classes, Mr. Woods stated. LONG SCHOOL DAY The school day at OCVI will begin at 8 am and end 2t 6.30 p.m. Grades 9, 10 and 11 will split into two shifts, one from 8 to 3.30 and the other from 9.30 to 5. Grade 12 and 13 will go from 11 a.m. fo 6.30 p.m. Inter-scheol athletics will be drastically curtailed at the school because the time-iables Season's On Simple Lines Simplicity is for little girls -- at least that's the fashion news for back to school. With this season's styling em- phasis on simple lines -- the gored or flared skirt, the box pleats with loose overblouse, and, of course, the always-popu- lar gathers, keeping outfits neat and fresh is easier than ever. Combine this simple styling with wash - and - wear fabrics, clothes all but 'launder them- selves". Look for "wash - and - wear" in all back-to-school wardrobe buying. In addition fo the now- ACTIVE LADS welcome the easy-going comfort of a wool jacket for school days. Looking over these new fab- rics, new brilliant colors 2nd variegated patterns, may cause wonder about laundering. The Maytag Home Service depart- ment advises this is no probiem --if you follow the correct pro- cedure. Wash - and - wear garments should be laundered frequently. Before laundering, pre-treat heavily soiled areas by rubbing lightly with a liquid all-purpose detergent. Ordinarily select either a cold water wash and rinse with regular agitation and spin or wa water wash and cold water rinse, regular agita- tion and spin speed, for resin- treated cottons or heavily-soiled synthetics: However, with any of the new bright - colored fabrics you'll want to use the cold water for- mula to avoid amy loss of color or fading. Pre-dissolve granular detergent or choose a liquid laundry detergent for cold water washing. A fabric conditioner added to the final rinse will control static electricity in man- made fibres. Wash five to six minutes. Us- ing the washer-and-wear setting, dryer-dry for 10 to 15 minutes. When the clothing is dry, re- move immediately and hang on hangers. i The Maytag Home Service de- partment assures this procedure will give satisfactory results with any wash-and-wear fabric that is 50 per cent or more syn- thetic fiber or with any of the and a detachable hood. resin-treated cottons. Many students who had quit are returning. LEVELLING OFF In contrast to the secondary schools, public schools are now experiencing a levelling-off of enrolment, according to Thomas Heath, an Oshawa Pub- lic School inspector. This year's expected increase is only 270, a significant reduction over previe ous years, he said. In spite of the landslide of registrations, all teaching posi- tions have been filed. With in- creased salaries and other bene- attractive profession, R. 'C. Bowes, assistant to the business administrator of the board of education, said recently. The last vacancies were filled at a recent board meeting with the addition of two teachers to OCVI and one to Donovan.
